being able to follow a post or thread without getting constant updates and not create a new notification each time or per message. although may still be able to count amount of new messages or replies. kind of half mute, instead of an fully mute/unfollow.

You are asking for same style of grouping reactions have? IIRC this was at some point limitation of the forum software. Not sure if FP crew can get around it.

It already does group together all the notifications from a single followed topic, just that if you keep reading the notification it will keep sending you more notifications as more posts are added (I'm not 100% sure how this works with push notifications, but I was under the impression that it worked in the same way). You can elect to follow the topic with no notifications at all

but then that mostly defeats the point of following it (though it will still show up when filtering by followed, which can be useful).

 

I'm not sure what a middle ground between those options would look like.

IPS is not really someone who asks what community wants and then does it. They do what they want and are interested in.
