144p gaming

Ok the title of the post is meant to lure people into looking at this post with its intentional typo, in short i have been looking through amazon and Newegg and am not able to decide on a good monitor to accompany my rtx 3080ti gaming rig that i managed to get at msrp. an someone pls suggest a cheap but good monitor which has 1440p and at least 120 hertz??? pls pls pls, i am overwhelmed by the choices and am looking for some help in which monitor to pick.

What is "cheap"?

Currently searching for a high refresh rate, 1440p monitor myself, too (albeit, I only have an RTX 2060 Max-Q in my laptop). I'll post again shortly for some that I've been looking at, though while browsing a couple months back, many people were recommending me LG's UltraGear monitors. Though, when I stopped by my local Microcenter the other day, a work/ sales-rep informed me that compared to the other 1440p, high refresh rate monitors they had, the LG's are "virtually the same," and are priced a bit higher.

This should one of the LG models @Tan3l6 mentioned above, priced at $369.99.

 

Even though they're both 1440p, 144Hz displays, the AOC is based on a VA manel whereas the LG is based on IPS. Depending on what you value most in your gaming/ computing usage, different panel technologies can suit different needs better than the other, and in most cases, I believe VA panels should be cheaper than a comparative IPS panel (compare the pricing of the AOC and the LG, and you'll see what I mean).

IPS is better for gaming as it generally have faster gtg response time.

It's VA panel which has better contrast ratio but noticeable dark level smearing and slower gtg response overall. I wouldn't use VA for gaming unless you're on tight budget or for specific reasons such as watching movies and shows.

ok so in theory this monitor is perfect as i will also use this monitor for gaming as well as general use right?

That's not exactly what I'm saying.

Contrast ratio would be more noticeable when viewing in dimmer lit room. For normal lit room it would be more difficult to tell apart unless directly comparing side by side. Most gamers are bothered with dark level smearing than appreciating darker level. 

 

Also it doesn't make IPS panel bad for general use, for instance you could still watch movies fine with it. 

 

It's a no brainer to get IPS panel over VA panel for gaming (especially the fact you got 3080ti rig), unless:

- You really cannot afford IPS monitor for some reason and VA is the only option.

- You don't have TV to watch movies and you really want deeper black levels when viewing. 

- You don't play competitive games AND play casual games that appreciate dark level like horror genre AND you're absolutely don't mind having dark level smearing on your monitor.

 

EDIT: An alternative VA monitor you can get is Samsung G7, not G5 and not 4k variant. G7 has better VA panel which solve dark level smearing and has fast response time overall.

You're going at this the completely wrong way. You're buying a 3080Ti and then search for a cheap monitor? Buy something good, you obviously have some money otherwise you wouldn't have bought a 3080Ti (even at MSRP)...

 

The MSI MAG274QRF-QD would be my choice.

I would get the following monitors to make the most out of it:
LG 27GP850 or 27GP83-B or 27GL850
MSI MAG274QRF-QD
DELL S2721DGF
Samsung G7 (if you really want to gamble Samsung's monitor QC)

If we can't convince you and still want budget monitor:

VA is fine enough for gaming too. VA panels being bad for gaming is a myth or has gone as myth by people overhyping IPS.

Some VA monitors are as good or better than IPS monitors. IPS got overhyped and today IPS is still overhyped. In fact, I love VA because of the great contrast and black levels. IPS is known to have great colors but if you value much better looking nights in games for example: VA. I have a VA monitor for like 4 years for (online) gaming and never got any problem with it.

 

And as Stahlmann mentioned, you have gotten a GPU that people are willing to murder someone and yet you'll wanna get a cheap monitor? If I had a 3080Ti, I certainly would have gotten a LG 48C1. Or LG 42C2 after the news/data sheet got leaked yesterday. What you want is like you have a Lamborgini to drive over to the grocery store.

That Asus monitor doesn't have fast pixel response compared to the monitors I've listed before. Between the two I would go with 27GL850.
