Hi, so I have an old computer I want to upgrade, but I dont want to spend that much since I already have a good pc.

It has a intel 05 q6600, and has both DDR2 and DDR3 slots. What is a slightly better processor which is compatible?

Also, for RAM, this is what I am thinking: https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16gb-240-pin-ddr3-sdram/p/N82E16820231671?Item=N82E16820231671&nm_mc=AFC-RAN-COM&cm_mmc=AFC-RAN-COM&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-PCPartPicker&AFFID=2558510&AFFNAME=PCPartPicker&ACRID=1&ASID=https%3a%2f%2fpcpartpicker.com%2f&ranMID=44583&ranEAID=2558510&ranSiteID=8BacdVP0GFs-R7EDXlqk9A95xKK5DZsIkQ

Thoughts?

What is it used for? That's a whole lot of money to put into RAM for an old Core 2 system. That RAM most likely wouldn't even work with your computer given that they're 8GB sticks.

Phobos: AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, 1TB Samsung SSD 980, 450W Corsair CXM, Corsair Carbide 175R, Windows 10 Pro

Polaris: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASRock X79 Extreme6, 12GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 1TB Crucial MX500, 750W Corsair RM750, Antec SX635, Windows 10 Pro

Pluto: Intel Core i7-2600, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASUS P8Z68-V, 4GB XFX AMD Radeon RX 570, 8GB ASUS AMD Radeon RX 570, 1TB Samsung 860 EVO, 3TB Seagate BarraCuda, 750W EVGA BQ, Fractal Design Focus G, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

York (NAS): Intel Core i5-2400, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3, HP Compaq OEM, 240GB Kingston V300 (boot), 3x2TB Seagate BarraCuda, 320W HP PSU, HP Compaq 6200 Pro, TrueNAS CORE (12.0)

That RAM has zero chance of working on 775.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Linux - Fedora

What are you doing on the pc and why are you upgrading?

You already have one of the better cpu's and by now even the best core 2 quad is just old and weak. Won't improve much if anything. If this is for gaming this whole pc is done for and it is MUCH better to save the money and get something newer.

As for the ram won't work all those boards are basically limited to 2gb dimms tops 4gb IF VERY LUCKY. Forget about 8.

well i do already have a 3070 and 10700k, but would it be possible to use the 16gb kit?

Yea i wouldnt bother, asus boards are trash on 775, unless you are on p965 or p35 and have a top tier board or one thats been bios flashed with a top tier board bios your board is gonna be inferior to basically everything but msi and some other junk

Though it should still be capable of semi decent ish fsb so i think best course if action here is overclock to 3.2 or something and raise fsb and rams as high as possible, 3.2 seems to be borderline on what you can run on stock, any higher than 1.35 seems to be diminishing returns so i dont suggest aiming for 3.6 or even 4ghz cause 4ghz seems to require ~1.65v, main issue with that is heat output, not to mention 65nm absolute max safe is prob only like 1.8v with deathzone of ~2.1v

Q6600 wise, oc to 3.2ghz and raise ram+fsb as high as possible, 8 multi with 400fsb should be an easy tune for 3.2ghz though you could go higher with 7.5 multi at 427fsb or 7 multi at 457fsb

Also 8gb sticks most likely wont work but considering you can run 4gb ddr2 sticks on anything newer than g31 well 8gb might work though i dont suggest it cause higher capacity usually means lower speeds, ram wise any average 1600 or 1866 will do cause asus board is garbage and most boards wont even reach 2000mhz anyways

I wouldnt bother with a board upgrade here but if you can somehow trade the crapppy p5k for something p45 from dfi, biostar, or gigabyte then sure why not, but i only reccomend that if you upgrade the cpu to a 771 45nm xeon like e/x5450, but unless you get a ddr3 board which is becoming more expensive by the day or you are like me and want to attempt swapping the nb on a p43 to a p45 (should be drop in for all i know just swap bios to a p45) which could result in a cheap ddr3 board but then requires tools that you dont have and prob will never use again, you need to use ddr2, on ddr2 micron d9 is king so get whatever 1066 5-5-5-15 ddr2 or 800 4-4-4-12, although you could prob opt for cheaper 1066 6-6-6-18 cause quadcores hate high fsbs (500+) so you dont need ludicrous ram that does 1400 anyways

Im an lga 775 ocer so yea have a decent bit of knowledge though i gotta get some tools to fix my ud3p so i can findally upgrade from my trashy p5q, even that stupid thing with a bios mod to p5q pro turbo just barely beats my g31m s2c (550fsb p5q vs 542fsb g31m s2c) which is pretty pathetic, though g31 still has more potential if i voltmod it but thats for a future project

Tldr only useful info here is stick with q6600 and oc fsb as high as you can keeping freq ~3.2 w 8x400, 7.5x427, or 7x457

Yea you arent gonna be able to use your 775 board for this, get a b560 or a z4/590 if cheap enough

Also better off selling that p5kc cause asus boards as i said are pathetic overclockers on p45 chipset, far behind dfi, biostar, and gigabyte. And only reason to even use a board like that is just for running a cheap quad core

Nowadays 775 is really only used for office pcs, ultrabudget gaming pcs, or f ing around with overclocking, and that board is only useful for an ultrabudget gaming pc and you already have better components anyways so unless you are retro gaming dont bother with that board and sell it

If you wanna f around with overclocking 775 then get a dfi, biostar, or gigabyte board as those overclock fsb very well, 600+ easy even on air, the giga boards go 700+ on subzero though some lucky samples can do ~700 on ambient, although you will need some good cooling causs these are not efficient cause they are ~13 years old by now

it is a p5kc

Officially only 2gb sticks are supported. Unofficially some very specific sticks from trascend and crucial can sort of work when you downclock or overclock them manually with pins on the board. But operation is not stable.

So basically 4gb ram is it.
