Best AMD cpu for a 3060/3070/3080

Giancarlo_Flex

So Im building a pc and currently have a 3060, I do want to maybe upgrade later to a 3070. I want the Amd Ryzen 7 5800x, would that be tge best cpu to pair with it or should I maybe go a little lower and get a Ryzen 5? I want my gpu to be most efficient and dont want my cpu to hold it back. Thanks

I will mainly be using it for gaming at 1080p ultra settings

You'll need to tell the community what you're planning on running with it.  Depending on the workload (e.g. game), you can have a Pentium 4 keep a pair of 3090's completely utilized.

God bless backwards-forwards compatibility of PCIE.

Anyway yeah, what are you gonna use in it?

In gaming I doubt it would make much difference

5600x will be as good as any of them.  5800x isn't faster or even worth buying.  5900x if you want cores.

Not sure going from a 3060 to a 3070 though.

All 3 of those CPU's, prior to Alder Lake at least, were as fast as you were going to get for gaming workloads. The difference between them was very slim and was game dependent. For a "gaming" machine, there is no real for anything greater than a 5600x.

5600x is gonna be solid enough for Games, and you should pick up a 1440p monitor for 3080 anyway because we dont have a 1080p480hz monitor yet.

3060 will most likely be bottlenecked any CPU you throw at it unless you're playing a REALLY strenuous AAA title

Yep, it is.  1080p and VR don't need a high core count, just a nice fast CPU.

I know buying parts can be stressful with all the information overload and benchmarking non stop, or the outright almost fraudulent hype (looking at you NVMe SSD).

The 5600x is the gaming CPU, the 5900x is the productivity CPU (that can game too), and the 5800x is caught in the middle with no real role since the price differences don't justify it.

Now, you can also look at the Intel 12th gen chips which are very speedy too 😉

On AMD side the 5800X is the logical choice for high end gaming. Higher core count ones have fragmented L3 which can reduce performance. 5600X would be good enough for most things still. Why 8 cores over 6 cores? In short some games can make use of the extra CPU power, and it would be a sweet spot equalling current generation consoles. It may make more impact within the lifespan of the system. If you're not budget constrained I'd get the 5800X.

I would recommend intel for 6/8 core CPU's in general. Their pricing is better and not too much slower. You can typically get the 10700f for the same price as a 5600X without much of a performance difference. This will give you two spare cores for any future AAA or more CPU demanding games (battle royal FPS, large open world, etc.).

If you tend to run a background programs or don't like closing programs when you start gaming, having an 8 core CPU will mitigate frame stutters and improve frame timings. Generally, the more core = smoother computer experience, but doesn't really affect your frame rate too much.
