External steam drive on Mac OS not writable

I am trying to install a steam folder on an external drive on macOS however I keep getting errors saying the drive is not writable however I know that it is as I am able to transfer files to it is there any fix to this

Is the drive formatted as NTFS?

no because then Mac OS wouldn't be able to see it, its exfat
