Looking to upgrade SSD from 512gb to a crucial

Hi i have a MSI GF65 THIN 10SDR-675 GTX 1660TI I7-10750H just upgraded to 2x16gb crucial ram and currently a kingstons NVME 2.0 PCIe GEN 3 512gb ssd! im looking to upgrade my gen 3 SSD im looking at the crucial P5 and P5 plus but not sure which to get the P5 plus says its backwards compatible with gen3 but would i experience less performance/speeds than if i were to just get the regular crucial P5 or is there a different company with better SSDs like PNY or something? I'm new to all of this and just am not sure and want to get just the right 1TB SSD for daily hardcore Gaming!

Get any 1TB SSD, they will all perform the same for gaming and small file sizes.  NVMe shines with huge files, video editing for example.

 

If you get the P5 it will work, but you won't see any benefit at all.

For gaming, budget NVMe drives tend to offer very similar experiences. My girlfirend uses the inexpensive Crucial P2 while I use the much more premium WD SN750. My SSD specs include much higher read and write but that only matters when handling very large files.

ok so go ahead and get the regular P5 1tb and not the P5 plus 1tb? alrighty thankyou! and will I notice a huge difference in speeds and such going from this stock SSD which benchmarks at like 16% performance just horrible to the crucial P5 1TB?

Using Userbenchmark?  It's not a reliable site, disregard.

 

No, you won't notice a speed increase.  Booting won't be noticeably faster, games won't load faster, etc.  The files determine how fast they can be accessed. 

 

There's a reason I still use SATA drives...

how would speeds not increase? MSI and Crucial both said speeds would be increased on this laptop for upgrading the SSD, what are the benefits then of upgrading SSD besides getting more storage obviously

Speeds are faster technically, in perfect situations.  Like how a Ferrari is faster than a Kia, unless driving in a 25mph subdivision.  The speed is only useful in certain situations.  You're looking at top speed numbers, which need a perfect use-case to realize.

 

Gaming and Windows files are relatively small and while the transfer is fast... moving to access the next file takes the same time for each drive.   NVMe is better with copying files from a drive to a drive where they can just open that spigot, they maintain top speed much longer.  Accessing and reading files is a slow process in the world of computing.

 

Definitely recommend reading a few websites or articles before dropping cash on a new drive...  For example...

No problem.  SSD (SATA vs NVMe) is a mis-hyped and misunderstood relationship.  These days it doesn't matter as much now that NVMe drives are more the norm and priced similarly to SATA.

So got the P5 installed and a newly installed windows 11 and oh boy, it’s boot up and program load up Speed is much quicker 1-2 seconds quicker, programs feels more sensitive like more quick/responsive! Certainly am happy that I went with this crucial P5 it’s working wonders for me :D

It’s not a whole lot quicker but it’s definitely noticeably quicker and boot up went from like 10 seconds time from pressing power to seeing the Home Screen down to around 7 seconds!
