I read that SSDs are fast and awesome (and expensive) and all that but, should I get one? .___.

What are the (noticeable) advantages of an SSD that makes it worth having it? I know people that now that I bought my gpu, tell me to get an SSD.

The SSDs I found where I live are:

- Corsair Neutron GTX

- Corsair Force GS

- Samsung 840 EVO

- Crucial M500

In case you say "Yes, you should buy an SSD", which one of the above would you pick? (Ignore prices)

Personally, I would get the Samsung 840 EVO, even though my opinion might be a little biased. The M500 is also really good.

The Crucial M500 would be a good choice. It uses MLC nand flash which is far superior to the TLC found in the 840 Evo. Although it can be said that the Evo performs the same as the M500 in most situations.

I'll keep this as simple and straight to the point for you.

Should you get one?

YES, you should buy an SSD. They are that much of an improvement. Throw your OS into it, and maybe a few games. Keep a HDD as storage.

Which one?

Samsing 840 Series. EVO or PRO, both are good. EVO series will keep your wallet happier.

the Crucial M500 is suspiciously cheap in comparison to the others .__. (840 Evo and M500 are out of stock atm (120gb ones at least) but meh I can wait.

Definitely get the 840 Evo.

Performance/price is irrelevant if it comes down to SSD's. Capacity/price makes more sense for most people under us. Let's say I barely noticed any difference between an ocz agility 3 and a 840 pro 512GB, waiting 1sec less doesnt make the difference.

What does it change/improve in games?

Faster loads and they wont be any difference in games loading times between a crucial m500 & 840 evo.

I'd go intel purely because of the stability OP. Though if you want competitive speeds you can look into samsung.

Go intel so you can shoot hoops with it.

Otherwise, get the cheapest decent one.  B)

Intel SSD 530 or Samsung 840 EVO.

Agreed. If you have the money go for the Intel one otherwise go for the 840 EVO.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only a GTX 1080, just a single 1080, where my glorious PC once stood....

I couldn't find any intel SSDs where I live. If they're new then maybe no one brought them here yet.

Are you not able to order em online? Its generally cheaper buying them online(no taxes depending on your location).

I'm going to try this with mine, now.

I personally see no real advantage to going with Intel over Samsung or even crucial.

There's people that somehow bring stuff (however it tends to be from sort of specific brands, so if I wanted a gpu, the cheapest option is Zotac and Sapphire) but god the lack of psus.....I'm glad I somehow found the one I have now.

Anyway, stupid question: If I have a 120gb SSD with windows 7 on it, how much free space would I have?

Win 7 is about 16gbs, a 120gb SSD has about 111.76gbs of usable space. So you have approximately 95.76Gbs of free space.

:o OHhhhhhhhhhhh. I was expecting something like 40gb free.

Only 40gbs free after a win7 install? I wouldn't even bother buying such a small SSD if that was the case. I had a 60gb OCZ Vertex 2 with my OS on it before switching to a 256gb OCZ Vertex 4 for OS purposes. The 60gb Vertex 2 had 55gbs of usable space.

I would say account for about 20GBs for windows, drivers and necessary computer programs. My win 7 is 19Gb (initial install was about 16) plus my video drivers are 1.5GB or so.

The Crucial M500 would be a good choice. It uses MLC nand flash which is far superior to the TLC found in the 840 Evo. Although it can be said that the Evo performs the same as the M500 in most situations.

I have a previous generation Samsung 840 250GB and couldn't be happier with the performance to price ratio. (mind you I snagged it about 8 months ago for $130 due to some sales and coupon stacking, so price/performance ratios may vary) Crucial's M500 was my original choice after having owned an Intel 330 180GB SSD, as I wanted something mid-sized for my laptop that wasn't IntelSPENSIVE. Would've acquired one too had it not been for the coupons and sale pricing, and of course reading up what others thought about Samsungs' drives.

I think what really gets me is that Samsung is one of the few manufacturer's which makes EVERY PART inside the drive: the NAND, Controller, Casing, and Firmware are all Samsung created, so even though it might use "Inferior" TLC flash NAND, Samsung gets to pick the best quality stuff it produces, and sell the off-quality pieces to competitors.

I'll keep this as simple and straight to the point for you.

Should you get one?

YES, you should buy an SSD. They are that much of an improvement. Throw your OS into it, and maybe a few games. Keep a HDD as storage.

Samsing 840 Series. EVO or PRO, both are good. EVO series will keep your wallet happier.

I'm RayWilliamJohnson and I approve this message!

What does it change/improve in games?

The most significant improvement for gaming, or video editing, would have to be load times. This is assuming your graphics card and processors speeds aren't bottlenecking, and that you have enough RAM. After that, most people's systems are bottlenecked by the traditional spinning Hard Drives of yesterday. In my experience going from a regular old Hitachi P7K500 (still used for User Data) to an Intel 330 180GB SSD has about a 30% improvement in boot times, going from over a minute to bootup and login, down to about 35-40 seconds. (I use a lot of programs for work/entertainment on startup and value my enjoyment more than speed.) When I had a fresh Windows 7 installation with only the drivers and updates installed, I had about a 15-20 second bootup from a cold start. Loved it.

You can check this out on your own by viewing the Windows Assessment score on any computer with a traditional Hard Drive vs one with an SSD - almost every time the HDD will be the lower scoring part (MAXIMUM 5.9/7.9 in Win7) with your CPU/GPU being higher scoring, assuming again that the system was made for video editing or gaming. Throw in an SSD and that hard drive rating skyrockets to 7.3-7.9/7.9 which will make booting Windows even faster, in addition to games/editing.

Currently the 250GB Samsung in my laptop is partitioned with only 60GB for Windows 7 and all my apps, including the full Adobe CS6 suite. Games are stored on the remaining partition, more on an external HDD, as the extra partition is filling with music. I get by fine having only 6-8GB free on C: Drive, but then again, I only use the laptop for Web Development, DJ-ing Music, and Light Games with friends.
