CPU idling at 55C

Ah ok. To be fair, my PC was sitting in a cold room with no heating, but when I have it where it belongs, it would idle at around 55C.

What about the randomly jumping temp? It still does it at room temperature (jumps from 55C to 62C, cools, jumps from 55C to 62C, cools, etc.)

It is totally normal for Ryzen to bounce around temps at low load. High voltages will do that to Tdie, which again, is a hotspot temp, so all the heat concentrated in one core will make it spike.

Hey everyone,

Recently I bought a better CPU cooler for my Ryzen 5 3600 because it was reaching temps of 90C!

But when I installed the new cooler, and after a couple days of running continuously, it's idling at 55C to 60C - and gaming at 75C to 81C. Still better than the stock cooler but not ideal.

I don't know if there's some sort of BIOS setting that's affecting it or something like that, but I know that it shouldn't have these temperatures at idle and under 75% - 80% load respectively.

I know that the thermal paste isn't the issue - it's high quality and was applied properly, the cooler is too high quality and applied properly. The intake/exhaust fans are providing good airflow - my 3070 doesn't ever want to exceed 64C under full load.

The CPU is not overclocked and the voltage setting is set to auto.

Any idea's what's causing the CPU idle temps to be so high?

Thanks in advance.

Ryzen tends to have higher idle temps than Intel. This is due to several factors, such as that Tdie is a hotspot temp, while Intel uses an average as its main reporting temperature, and that AMD uses higher voltages at idle and single core loads compared to all-core.

What are your load temps like?

Begs to ask the question, what CPU cooler did you buy and use??

They actually appear to be fine but Cinebench was only running for a few minutes so I assume it hasn't had time to properly reach its average temperature.

But I've also noticed that it does this weird thing where it cools down to about 40C and randomly jumps up to 48C to 50C and just repeats this. I'm just compressing the video to upload so I'll tag you on that video when it's done.

Ok, it's done. Hopefully you can make that out?

It's the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO V2

Looks as if the cooler is not properly mounted, but those temperatures are good for load (73oC).

That looks to me like you mainly get 40C at idle, which is totally acceptable for Ryzen.

Yeah, the loads are good. It's just the idle temps that I'm a bit concerned about.

Those are normal for Ryzen 3000/5000 series as they pump the chips with more voltage for idle, but this should drop once under a load. Are you on the latest BIOS by any chance?

I haven't really checked but I assume not, how would that affect the idle temps? (just curious)

I might be wrong, but sometimes they adjust the voltages and stability. Some have had an improvement, while others may not.

You don't benefit from the CPU being cold, the cpu won't work better or faster if it's cold.

50-60c is perfectly fine and reasonable idle temperature and 80c is perfectly fine temperature under load.

A lot of motherboards will default to adjusting fan speeds to reduce noise, as long as the temperatures are reasonable.... so at idle, your cpu cooler may run at minimum rpm and keep your cpu at 50-60c - you could force the rpm to 50%-75% and lower the temperature, but it would be pointless.

Use HWInfo and see the rpm of the cpu cooler at various temperatures... and if the temperatures bother you, go in bios and change the fan curve to stay spinning at higher speeds even at idle.

I know that it's perfectly safe for it to be at 50C - 60C and provides no additional speed but the fan maxed itself out to try and cool it (1500RPM - barely audible).

That makes sense. Also, it turns out that it WAS the airflow... I have all the fans in the top of my case set to exhaust; so most of the cool air for the CPU was immediately exhausted 😑.

I switched it to intake and now my CPU's idling at 38C...

I feel dumb. Thanks for all your help though!
