Dbrand served with "Cease and Desist" from Sony for Darkplates

methodG

Just remove logo, boom problem solved..

Seen friends get this, now they will just spray paint the covers themself..

Not sure whats more beautiful, awful sprwaypaint or dbrands product.

It would be hilarious if a "leaked" 3d printer schematic for these panels got into the wild and people could just print their own.

I'm still not sure how this kind of thing applies to things like this, but as was stated earlier, car parts are made by multiple non-oem companies and its a non issue. I mean, you can get custom kits to turn Volkswagen Jettas into mini trucks. (https://www.smythkitcars.com/jetta-golf-ute)

Is Sony going to go after all the ones on amazon? Or any of the other companies that sell panels? Just google PS5 replacement panels..

Tbh, if they made it themselves, and Sony made it where you can remove the side plates, can't one argue that Dbrand had reverse engineered the product in order to make their own? Like laptop case manufacturers?

is water wet?

i don't know what I'm doing either...

what is there to "reverse engineere", the only different is the placement/scaling and measurements.

Else it's just a generic plastic cover, that "anyone" could really create or copy. Like a plastic bottle, many different shapes and sizes, but still just a bottle. Could be explained better, but just see there isn't much to reverse engineer than to make it fit properly.

Reverse engineering is a fancy phrase for copying a design and Dbrand used their laser scanners to do just that. The original darkplates are a 1:1 replica of the PS5’s panels with slight modifications to the textured surface and branding. Doesn’t matter how little effort it takes, it’s still considered IP theft when you do it specifically to make a profit like Dbrand did.

Now, their new darkplates do change things. Since they’re not a direct copy and can be seen as an improvement on the design they might actually have a fighting chance should Sony take them to court over this.
