Hello everyone !

I'm trying to introduce my little sister to PCs and show her how to build a PC. My issue, like many others, is finding a good deal. Please when you recommend builds, please consider parts available to order today with today's prices. My original part list for her was undermined by out of stock or insanely inflated pricing. This was supposed to be a birthday gift 2.5 months ago, but I held off due to prices. She has been super understanding and patient, but I want to do this for her now.

Her interests: Coding (she currently wakes up early every Saturday morning to code very simple games using pre-made blocks of code, but she wants to learn to create on her own now), Minecraft, and Rocket League

Budget: $1000 ± 100 or so..

Country: USA

Thank you for your time. I didn't grow up with much, so if my little sis likes to code, I want to help her explore that with the resources I have now.

APU because that's it's the best GPU you can get right now without going through a scalper, plus it should be able to play Minecraft and Rocket League without much issue.

Fast memory, you can upgrade it to 32GB if you want, but it's not really necessary. Just be sure to keep the same memory speeds.

Good cooler, pretty good SSD, very solid motherboard, easy case to build in, and overkill PSU so you can throw a 3070 in there if she wants to get into more demanding stuff in the future.

The sad part is that you are very unlikely to find any GPUs that are not inflated in price right now unless you are incredibly lucky. Your best bet is eBay for a GPU as there are no new ones in stock hardly anywhere.

I've never bought uses pc parts.. let alone a gpu that might have a lot of miles on it... thoughts?

I appreciate it. Yeah, having a pc that has room to grow will be a good lesson for her. Thanks for your time. I'll look into more options, but your list is in agreement with the parts I had in mind too !

CPUs and motherboards I tend to buy new, but but only because I tend to not upgrade them for ~3-4 years and might as well get one that will last a while. I have bought them and used them in secondary rigs without much issue, but they aren't nearly as much of a value compared to new ones as used GPUs are (assuming the market isn't now). GPUs, on the other hand, I have only ever bought one new in my life, and that's because the used market is all kinds of screwed up right now. I've never had an issue, and that includes buying old mining cards. You might have to replace the fans and thermal paste on them, especially if they were a mining card, but I've never had an issue with them, and if you can get one for a good price, go for it.

If you had the time to wait, I'd say wait until the end of the year so you can get the next gen CPUs or the current CPUs on a Black Friday sale. If you wanted to get stuff now, this would be the way to go.
