Hello, I am building my very first watercooled pc, and I'm gonna throw some corsair dominators in there and watercool them:) The kit I have has a speed of 1600MHz. Can I overclock this to 2133 or 2400?

maybe 1866, just buy 2133 ram if you want that. you have to overklock in huge steps and most ram won't do that.

for example: 1600MHz ram will do maybe 1750MHz or so, but the next step is 1866 so you can't overclock

(i'm assuming you will go intel ^^)

You wont gain much (if any) performance overclocking your RAM. I think the only benefit you will see is in benchmarks, but not any in real world apps. But i maybe wrong...

The question was if he/she could overclock it, not if there was any benefit to overclocking RAM.

Well I'd say it depends on your mobo if it supports higher clocks. If it does support it then yes, yes you can overclock them, but I'm not sure to that specific clocks.

I mentioned that because the risks are bigger than the actual benefits. He can decide for himself if it is worth. :)

Sorry if my English is not perfect, but it isn't my native language :)

Thank you all a lot for fast answers:) I know that OCing ram has no benefits (for gaming at least), but gaining a tiny tiny bit of free performance is always good. I guess paying $70 for a dominator waterblock is waste, so will probably just pick up some cheap corsair vengeance 1600 instead.

But... but... it's water cooled!

But will also try to find someone that has watercooled dominators and see how far they can oc them (I know dazmode has some)

I think if it is your first build then just get some 2133 sticks instead then tring to over clock 1600mhz sticks. I can only get my 1600Mhz Kingston HyperX's to 2000Mhz and no higher. It was a pain to do my first time took at least two weeks with work and stuff but i did get it to over clock. If i had it to do again i wouldn't do it, however, if i get my hands on some samaung green sticks then i will overclock do the overclocking again. Check in to the samsung green 30nm RAM if you really want to overclock your RAM, although they will be releasing some 22nm versions soon.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

Now are you going to use integrated graphics? Because ram speed is HUGE with intergraded. I got 30% fps in games going 1600 to 1866 in my server pc. But if you are not using ig and have enough ram make a ram disk and put games on it. You will get a big performance boost. But those are the only reasons I see for oc ram. Also I have the dominator and its at 1866.But I can get to 2100 but I have to crank up the latency.

1600MHz is a good speed for a gaming computer. If you are using integrated graphics then the ram speed is important because the integrated graphics uses the ram with your computer so having faster speeds will give you better performance. The safest way to overclock ram is to use XMP compatible ram because these clocks are guaranteed to work on that ram.
