Unusually high idle CPU speed for 5600x?

Gizmokrap

Hi all, I've just upgraded my rig from i7-4790k to ryzen 5600x.

I don't know if it's normal or not, since this is my first time with Ryzen chips, but my CPU is idling at around 4 to 4.5GHz, either in BIOS or in Windows.

Can someone clarify if that's a normal thing going?

On a side note, how much is a used i7-4790k going for these days? I've seen a range from $150 CAD to $200 CAD.

The used market can be a little weird, because sometimes prices are either wishful thinking or predatory on the seller's part.  Considering some 10th gen chips can be had for $200 or under CAD, and even something like an 8th or 9th gen is still better than 4th gen, especially since it won't have official Windows 11 support, I'd say it's virtually worthless at this point. $150-200 is definitely way too much to pay.

thats pretty much normal behavior

Thanks mate, as I said, first time with Ryzen so didn't know what to expect. Thought the normal speed should've been 3.7GHz as shown on the spec sheet.

Now, gotta replace the AMD CPU cooler. Much louder than what I thought... even when it's idling.

Depending on how you are reading idle speed it might be inaccurate. For my 5600x, Task Manager at idle almost always shows ~4 GHz. Checking Ryzen Master shows all cores in sleep mode with just one running at ~300 MHz.

Be sure to QUOTE or TAG me in your reply so I see it!

When you start playing with it on a good cooler you will see it spends quite a bit of time in the 4600-4850 range.
