Hi! I have a Sandisk Extreme SSD which has been working well for a while now. I need an external hard drive because I have 2 different computers where I need to access the same files (over 700gb in total). Now when I changed the hard drive to another computer, all the files I had created on the other computer last time were lost from the hard drive. I had before the Samsung SSD T5 which did the same. I have noticed that if files are lost, they are always lost when connected to the same computer. So could there be something wrong with my other computer. And how could I fix that problem?

Are you properly "ejecting" the drive before disconnecting it?

Has it always happened with that drive, or is it new?

It has happened with my old Samsung drive and today with my 1 month old drive.

Check the drive to make sure there is nothing going on with the drive.
You can check the SMART information by using a program like CrystalDiskInfo.

If nothing is going on with the drive, make sure that you have nothing BitLocker encrypted on the device, and that all of the files are accessable from the original computer where the files were created.

Are both systems running the same Operating System (ex. both Windows)?

What is the format of the drive in question? NTFS?

Are both PCs connected to the same LAN? Why not just share a network drive, set up the correct security and permissions settings, and transfer the files over the network?

If this external USB SSD is your backup strategy, you really should have a separate backup for each system.

Yeah it's NTFS. Both computers have Windows 10. My computers are not on the same network.

Well it's either you've just been unlucky and have had 2 drive failures, or there's something fishy about the other PC.

Do you always plug it into the same USB port on the second PC, or have you tried other USB ports on the second PC with same results?

It's possible that the port isn't providing enough power (or too much power) and corrupting the drive file system. Some front USB ports on older PCs had issues like that. USB Ports on the back of PC soldered to the motherboard are often more stable... or rather, I've seen that be the case before.

According to the USB spec, USB 1 & 2 can put out 500mA, where as USB 3.0 can put out 900mA.

Devices like external drives (not flash drives) tend to need more power to operate properly.

Also, as @JJorbann pointed out are you using any encryption software, like the Sandisk Secure Access software? If so, is it installed and configured the same on both PCs?

I have always used front usb ports. I'm not using any encryption software. I have very cheap case on my second pc so the front usb ports might be the issue.
