Hey guys,

so i want to set up an home server from my single external hard drive in windows 10.

would be really great if it does not include SMB cos smb and Microsoft accounts just don't go well together

Thanks

SMB is what you want to use…. SMB is window’s preferred option. What makes you say you don’t want SMB? All of my Freenas shares are SMB, as is almost everyone else’s.

If it’s just a single external drive, I don’t think a NAS/server is exactly what you’re after. There is a lot of “work” in setting up and maintaining a server, a single drive makes a lot of that work “not meaningful”. What is your use case? Maybe there are other options we can recommend.

i understand that smb is the best option but how do i set it up properly. when i tried setting up an smb file share, on the other device in my network it asked for my Microsoft account and its password. it is my personal PC so how do i do it in a way that i would not need my Microsoft id

You would have to set it up as a share anyone can access if you don’t want to use credentials. For my SMB shares, I use a separate set of credentials that I set up within Freenas. But if you would like the folder to be wide open, you need to set the permissions as such.

There are lots of instructions that tell you how to do it. This is just the first one I found on google.
