Lay of the land

heztio

Budget (including currency): 15.000kr ~ 1750 USD

Country: Sweden

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Almost exclusivly gaming.

Feels like ive been waiting far to long since my last build. some minor tweaks every couple of month but nothing major.

im currently sitting on a build with the following specs:

Processor :   i5-7600K CPU - cooled with an 240mm AIO from fractal?
Storage: Samsung 960 M2 and a 1TB Samsung 860 SSD

M/B: ASUSTEK PRIME Z270-A

RAM:  Corsair 16GB CL15 Vengeance 3000Mhz

G/C: Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti

PSU: EVGA Supernova G3 750W

And im think about an upgrade path.

the market being what it is right now, should i try to "buy the dip" for an ok graphicscard from the 3k series, just to keep trucking along for a year or 2 more.

Or whould it be better to sit on what i have, hope that the craze dies down and i build a new system from scratch sometime during next year or maybe 2023.

Replace the 7600K and its board with a modern platform (either AMD or Intel) and a 6-core or better CPU, sit on everything else.

The 1080 ti is still a very relevant card for gaming up to 1440p/60fps in AAA titles and 1440p/144fps in esports, and getting a card that will be a significant improvement over it will eat up at least half your budget by itself.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

I would use PcPartPicker as comparing it to my $1700 setup, I feel there are many places you could upgrade (especially the Graphics Card).

Probably pick up something like a 5800X or 5900X and whatever B550 board you like. Pick up some 3600 MHz RAM while you're at it.

This leaves around 1000 for a 3080 or similar, when you can get them, but keep the 1080 Ti for now, its still plenty powerful.

so maybe the more sensible option is to get a new cpu + M/B, and wait until the next generation of either Nvidia or AMD graphic-cards launches?
i agree that my card does feel quite alright still, the big jumps in performance wont happend until you look at 3070 and up.

1080Ti works for 1440p/240Hz in eSports and 1440p/100Hz for AAA with a relevant CPU. 🙂 I get slightly less due to the ultrawide.

While it IS a few generations and special features behind... it's really a solid card still.

I have been thinking about doing a AMD build for some time now.

I know its hard to tell, but do you feel like this is a good time to switch, given their upcomming offers?
i know they are been doing a big turnaround the last couple of years, but i dont know if it is a fluke or a steady trend for them

If you're gonna upgrade now, 5th gen Ryzen is the way to go.

Though waiting till 6th gen may be smart, since they may be better value, and 5th gen will likely drop in price.
