Hi

A couple months ago we got a offer to install fiber in our house. I was super exited (obviusly), gigabit internet on the way, yay!! But when i talked to my dad about it he said that he didn't think it was that big of a deal and that he tought that it was too expencive (circa 4000$) and ''The internet is working now, right?''. At the time our house had a 1/1 mbit connection. For me, and for the other 5 persons in the house this was a massive bottleneck and whenever i or anyone else made something more bandwithintensive than browsing the internet internet was painfuly slow for the others. I eventualy got my dad to change the contract so we got 21/2 witch was better, but not quite enoght for us, it was atleast better.

Then a week ago or so the same guys dumped a new offer into our mail. Now for 1000$ cheaper! Now, in hope that dad would change his mind, i talked to him but he just kinda said that ''They'l just make it even cheaper in a year or so''. This time i really tried to convince him but nope, no fiber for me. The offer doesn't run our until a moth or so, there is still hope.

So my cuestion is: How do i convince him to install fiber?

Sorry of i spelled a couple words wrong, dyslexia and swedish as my native language messes things up a bit.

Thank you!!

Tell him why and how it would benefit him and the rest of the family and what with fiber you could do which could help him.

5 people running multiple streams, while your server downloads and uploads, plus the wireless devices at times...

There are plenty of instances where it would be the best thing ever, you have to figure them out and explain them easy enough to your dad to understand and allow.

But yeah, Thousands of dollars.. don't just come out of nowhere, I can totally see why he's apprehensive after already upgrading the internet.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

how long are u getting internet for 3000 dollars..

I believe that's the fee to run the cable, they'd probably have to pay for it on top of that.

Honestly, I would say it's not worth it. As much as I want gigabit, paying thousands of dollars for it just isn't worth it. Sorry

Give him a list of how your internet has expanded to ALLOW multiple streams downloading while uploading and the ability to do more. and the many other examples...

The possibilities of Fibre allow you to do what?> compared to high speed ADSL2+

He wants that info, seems you can provide it.

Me and my family recently paid 20,000SEK (about 3000 USD) to get fiber. For us it's definitely worth it. Here are some reasons why:

Monthly cost - This is by far the biggest reason why my mom and stepdad thought it was a good idea. Right now we are paying about 900-1000 SEK for our TV package and our 8/1Mbps ADSL connection. With fiber we can get 100/10 and TV channels for ~600 SEK. That means that for each month after our big 3000 USD payment, we save 400 SEK (about 60 dollars). After 4 years we will be at plus/minus 0 in terms of cost, and during those years we will have 15 times as fast Internet with better TV, and all years after those first 4 we will actually be saving money.

For us this would have made sense even if we didn't get faster Internet or better TV, since we will save money on the long run.

Speed and future proof - ADSL is pretty much dead. We get 8/1Mbps and that's God awful. It's so slow and I'd kill myself if I had to share it. Luckily for me my mom basically only uses Facebook and send mail, so her usage doesn't affect me that much.

Anyway it's painfully slow and ADSL is pretty much dead. We won't be able to cram that much more out of it. Fiber on the other hand, by just upgrading the end points in the future (no new cables needed) we could get get hundreds of terabytes (some say a few petabytes) per second. A good rule of thumb about technology is that "nothing is future proof", but that rule does not apply to fiber. The raw bandwidth is not the only benefit either, the latency also goes down dramatically.

Value of the house goes up - A lot of people look the cost of installing fiber and goes "I don't want to pay that to get fiber" but many don't realize that you are basically paying yourself. This isn't like buying a car that you will sell for less than you bought it for. This is like building a swimming pool or expand your house. Sure you might put down 3000 dollars now, but if two identical house were being sold, one with fiber and one without, the buyer would obvious lean towards the house with 100 times faster Internet connection. Offers like these doesn't come very often. It only comes "often" until there are enough people willing to put down money for it. In my area the requirement was ~30% of the households (about 50% agreed to it though, so they are currently installing it). The other 50% will have a much harder time installing it later, and will have to pay much much more. You get a huge discount because they only have to ruin the road once to install it to multiple people. If one or two people then change their mind they will have to pay for all the extremely expensive work themselves.

I'd like to see those speeds on my LAN, forget internet.  I don't download tons of stuff and I don't game much.  That bandwidth and speed would be awesome connecting peripherals/devices/systems though.
