I recently got a nice Dell Precision 5550 with a docking station (think chungus dongle) as a replacement for my work desktop. Stats and performance is quite on par with the desktop, but the cooling performance is lacking. Under load it heats up to 100°C for 1 minute before even thinking of cooling.

In the company we already talked about different ways people place their laptops to achieve good cooling. Closed, flat on hard surface. 30° open and screen deactivated. Or fully open and using the screen as second screen.

The thing is, I have a 3D printer and could go all crazy on how I place that laptop on my shelf for best cooling performance, but before I do that and spend weeks on trying out different configurations I was wondering if anyone here already has experience with different methods to keep a laptop cool. I've heard miners would use a tent setup, with the spin on top, and the screen 45° open?

PS: Tweaking the fan curves and adding an external fan will happen once I know how it stand on my shelf.

It's just a badly cooled laptop with the same cooler in it as it's 6year older version. Just have it open with the back lifted so it can get air easily nothing else to do about that just a shit cooler design they haven't changed in ages. Just look at the xps which is the direct derivative of this thing. Same story overheats on anything but the most basic model as that was the kind of specs that cooler was originally made for.

Sounds perfectly normal for a Workstation. CPU Temperature can change drasticly fast.

On my Desktop with a HUGE CPU Cooler, when i start Prime95, it takes like 5 seconds to reach almost maximum CPU Temperature, after that it only goes up a few more °C.
When i close Prime95, it takes like <5 Seconds to have idle Temperatures again.

The real question here is: When Load begins, which CPU with how many Cores is at Load? What's the Clock speed?

How does Clock speed change when 100°C is hit? What happens after 3-5 minutes, when cooling starts? It stays at 100°C? Where are Temperature and Clock speed under sustained Load?

Is Performance missing? like, Cooling defective, so it throttles to extreme low Clockspeeds?

If Clock speeds stay high, there is kinda no issue there. The CPU is allowed a maximum of 100°C, anything up to that is within specifications.

But since this is for your Work place, then this Forum is the wrong one to ask. Dell's Premium Support is among the best. Use it, their technicians should know best, if this is normal, and how to fix it if it isn't.

It is not your job to fix your Work tools yourself 😉
