Do I need a new monitor?

littlegreen

Hi all,

I broke my monitor yesterday - terrible business, I tell you - I was aiming for a mosquito that somehow made its way inside and barely touched the monitor and... (see pictures below).. I really didn't hit it hard, I suppose I just got a weak spot along the curve.

It's a LG G34GK950G - B, so a 3440x1440 @ 100Hz (120Hz Overclock) VA panel with a 1900R

Problem no. 1 is I cannot find a panel for this, as all sites cite it as an IPS display, which this is not (the non -B model is). I am planning on disassembling it next weekend to try and figure this out, but given the fact the IPS panel costs $500, I doubt I will find the VA panel much cheaper ...

So that begs the question - should I even bother repairing this at all, or should I try and sell it for peanuts and buy something else. On one hand, this is really not a bad screen - and on the other, things have gotten cheaper since I bought it...

If I were to replace this though, what would anyone suggest? I got fairly used to the form factor - a 34" ultrawide in a 1900R curve. I was thinking about the Odyssey G7, however, I think the 1000R curve is a bit too much... Colour accuracy is not my main priority, so I thought if you guys can recommend something with a resolution of 3440x1440 in 34" with a slight curve (1900-1800 maybe?) and with as little ghosting as possible, I would really appreciate it....

..or does anyone think I should repair my current one and keep it? Please let me know your thoughts, meanwhile, I will be watching monitor reviews on YT 😄

Cheers!

could just be a windwall, you could try moving the panel around after opening it up and look at the results, but i think it's doomed. normally i'd say try a new monitor if you are gonna buy something new but since it's curved the options aren't great. You can wait for a 34gp83A-B used on ebay from a 100% seller, i've seen it for as low as 400usd shipped, would not recommend the samsung monitors.

I noticed you have got 34GN850B in your signature - any reason not to recommend that one? 🙂 It has been on my radar since yesterday, as it looks like a more-than-decent screen...?

the 83A is just the same screen with a lower possible oc setting, same panel, not worth the 200usd diff, as with all uw, you are buying for the uw first and foremost, everything else being great is just a bonus 😀

Like @xg32 said, it's basically the same monitor. Depending on your region one might be cheaper than the other. Just get the cheaper out of the two. Both are excellent monitors and pretty much as good as it gets for IPS ultrawides.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
