Do I need An AIO?

crakddx

Hello all!
Do I need an AIO?
I plaan to do OCing up to 4.5-4.6 ghz*, and I would also like my pc to be quiet. I am also buying an AIO so I don't have to pay for extra fans, and because it is tiny (the pump) compared to other aiir coolers, and I think it gives a clean finish. The AIO I have in mind is the Corsair Hydro h100i Plaatinum, paired with a Ryzen 7 5800X and an RTX 3070 FE. I am going to be streaming Valorannt, which iss a CPU bound game, although I will be using NVENC for the encoder. Additionally, I want to get a Corsair AIO so it can link wiith my (planned) 4000X Icue. So wrapping back to my main question, do I need to buy ann AIO? It fits in myy budget by tthe way.
*Checking if the CPU cann overclock this high EDIT: it goes up to 4.7
Cheers to anyone in advance!

I have a 5800X as well and I thermal throttled with a H100i, and I've heard people even had problems with the H150i. I'd recommend the NH-D15 or a NH-U12A with corsair fans if you really need the RGB

I was at stock with no OC, It would overheat way too much and just shut down randomly

Arctic Liquid Freezer II, Ek aio, Be Quiet Silent loop 2 should all be better than h100i.

Temperatures will depend more on voltage than clock speed.

What case? You could've gottenn a faulty chip as welll. Also, is your CPU in likee a toaster orr smth? Becauuse at sstock settings thatt is very unusual.

Corsair 465X, And it's normal for the 5800X. Quite a lot of people had the same issue when upgrading from older gen and carrying on their coolers

Edit: 3 Intake LL120's + 1 Exhaust LL120 in addition to the fans already on the h100i

its normal for 5800x to heat up like 9900k or 10900k, but h100I will be fine.

Yeah, forget about that. Precision boost is far more effective than any OC you'll achieve. The thing you want to do is undervolt with the curve optimizer. Not only will that help it run cooler, but it gives PB/PBO more headroom to boost. I've got a per core undervolt on my 5900X and with PBO limits dialed in, I get 4.6-4.7GHz all core and single core boost up to 5.15GHz.

the straight answer is no you dont need an aio. a beefy air cooler like d15/d14, assassin 3, dark rock pro, and similar can match or out preform many aios.

if you do go with an aio, I really only recommend corsiar for rgb. as corsiar has best in class rgb software, but best performers are

artic liquid freezer II

ek aio

phanteks glacier one

you'll want a 240mm aio minimum.

the rgb for these will be dependent on what's supported by the motherboard. but as said the the performance and noise levels are better.

also as another user stated the configuration of your voltage and style of OCing can also have large impact on your temps

You don't need an AIO. If you want to compete with AIO, you need one of the best heatsinks you can buy. Not some rinkydink 40 buck cooler.  And since AIO gets fresh air directly from outside, you will want to feed your air cooler plenty of fresh air or else its not a fair fight 🙂
