*Laptop Guidance Required*

Hello, I’m currently trying to decide whether on not to stick with my Dell Inspiron 13” (5301) or go for the HP ENVY 13” or get something along the lines of a light 13” laptop at £~800. I use it for school - office 365 etc, light gaming - Minecraft, Photoshop.

I’ve been looking at stats and the Mx450 is meant to have a ~30% performance boost on the Mx350. The HP envy also has much longer battery. I already bought the Inspiron but I can still get a refund and switch. I just thought there isn’t much difference between the i5 and i7 and a better discrete GPU with touchscreen and a better display would be good. Im just looking for a second opinion.

Dell Inspiron 5301 - £769:

  • i7-1165G7
  • Nvidia Mx350 (2GB GDDR5)
  • 512GB NVMe SSD
  • 8GB LPDDR4x 4267mhz
  • 3-cell 40whr Battery (5.5hr life)
  • 300nits FHD display, 95% sRGB

HP Envy 13” (ba1013na) - £799:

  • i5-1135G7
  • Nvidia Mx350 (2GB GDDR6)
  • 512GB NVMe SSD
  • 8GB DDR4 2933mhz
  • 3-cell 51whr Battery (10hr life)
  • 400nits IPS touchscreen 100% sRGB

He has slower memory but appears to use a lot less power.  Not sure why that is exactly.  Could be the cpu. Both laptops are potentially quite light on memory.  How expandable memory is could matter.  Looking at uses I’m seeing “potato”, “kind of potato”, “NOT POTATO” but with only 8gb of memory photoshop might be potato too.  Photoshop can be potato if the images are small enough.

Photoshop likes thread count and gpu more than it likes ghz.  “Light gaming” in general is pretty thread limited though it varies. I don’t know if there’s a thread count difference between the two CPUs. If one is 4/4 though while it plays games now it might not do it for much longer.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Found a laptop you might be interested in. Dedicated RTX 3000 gpu, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX506HC 144Hz 15.6" Full HD Gaming Laptop (Intel i5-11400H, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050, 8GB RAM, 512GB PCIe SSD, Windows 10)

They also have one that's £649.99, with a i5-10300H and GTX 1650Ti instead. So... less money, but less performance too.

ASUS ROG Strix G512LI 15.6 Inch 144Hz Gaming Laptop (Intel Core i5-10300H, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650Ti, 8GB RAM, 512GB PCIe SSD)

It also says it ships without an OS, but you can either use the free version for a while, and buy it in full from Microsoft, or get the key for cheap elsewhere.

Idk if you can still get it by the time you see it, but there's a solid third option as well.
