Keep cable.  Unless you do math differently where you're from.

 

Long version:  Fiber shouldn't give you any better ping, or uptime.  Cable for me has been extremely reliable, and my fibre as well.  I consider them equal performers for all intents, unless you have some odd requirement that you're not telling us.

I get the math says the cable is better, but looking for anyone with real world experience with positives/negatives. Is fiber really more stable/consistent? 

My cable works great 90% of the time, but when its not working it can be crap for weeks at a time.

Fiber all the way it will be more stable as you get your own dedicated connection opposed to sharing with your neighbors

Where do you live that's an issue?  In Atlanta and the suburbs, I've never had a slowdown regardless of time of day.  Maybe it's just Comcast that has good cable?

 

As a matter of fact, Comcast delivers 20% more bandwidth than contractually obligated.  I got 180Mbs when paying for 150, and 360Mbs when paying for 300.

 

I hate Comcast customer service, but their internet is solid.

move to fiber, your ping may drop a little and it should have better uptime and losing 100 down doesn't matter but that upload speed change can for some workloads

Time of day has never really been an issue. They've had signal/noise issues that have screwed it up for awhile. Seems like storms and the like can screw up half the state before. I'm just not sure fiber actually does better in this aspect. I've got zero experience with it.

I’d go Fiber. Because with cable you never know how many people are on the node. The more people the lower service will be during prime time. But coax based services are prone to RF interference, which degrades service.

Most residential fiber is shared bandwidth with neighbors using pon solutions to split the fiber near the homes. There is normally much more bandwidth do share though.

 

 

Id switch to fibre, that upload speed is nice, and it just generally works better.

All the cable in towns/cities around me is above ground on the poles under the powerlines. The insulation on the outside can get damaged or degraded from UV light over time and when water gets in and on the copper it really messes things up.

I went with fiber on my end because it was $5 for gig vs my 400 meg that wasn't really giving me this.

 

My issue is I had spectrum cable for $65 and switched to ATT fiber for $72 (including equipment fee). I now have speeds of 500 megs on my wireless network via my phone that I was barely getting 40 with cable. Also, daily cable would go out for a hot minute or two. Fiber hasn't been buried yet on the road and still haven't experienced a drop yet. (I also have the advantage of work providing internet expense up to $75).

 

The downside is its ATT. This brings me to another question. Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of learning how to improve my home network to be...how do you say...hidden from ATTs view and still maintain speeds or close to it? I'm looking to setting up a home security camera system with my own onsite storage and server along with just a home NAS or is it SAN? and I would also like to learn how to utilize what I have read to be Rhaspberrypi to block ads and other networking traffic from my ISP. Where would be a good starting point?

It’s called a VPN. You can subscribe to a service. Or you can rent a  VPS and create your own. On a side note, services like Netflix will actively try to block users using VPNs, so be aware of that. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
