Is this real?!?! Apparently 980 Pro having issues in PS5

Short but sweet…apparently there might be an issue with the Samsung 980 Pro running in the PS5…maybe it’s an issue with the drive the end user has?? Maybe it’s limited to some drives…maybe it’s a real issue??

I don’t have the beta invite yet  but I hear that the 250gb and 500gb drives are hitting faster speeds? But the 1-2TB drives are pegged at 5500?

Dude doesn't know what he's talking about. The 980 pro can reach speeds approaching 7000MB/s read (it's never exact) without the Magician software. Writes are slower at around 5000-5500MB/s, but that's also fairly normal. The advertised speed is always read, which is almost always faster than write.

 

It's not made clear how they were measuring the speed on the PS5, but they were most likely looking at it during write, and don't have enough clue to understand that it's not going to be 7000MB/s for that under any scenario.

 

Not for nothing, but this is why I have a hard time following smaller YouTubers. There's so much stuff like this where some dude got a webcam and thinks he's an expert now. They create faux controversies simply because they don't actually understand the tech.

The Samsung Magician software has nothing to do with unlocking any kind of extra performance. The drive itself performs the same whether you have that software installed or not. For the most part, Samsung Magician is just a run-of-the-mill drive info program that shows you SMART data and lets you run benchmarks. It even works with non-Samsung drives.

 

Samsung Magician's RAPID Mode is available only for Samsung drives, and all it does is use a portion of system RAM as a cache for your SSD. That's it. The main benefit is that it can smooth out system IO. When I used a SATA Samsung 860 Evo as my OS drive, I noticed a small improvement to system responsiveness, but that's it. Large writes weren't impacted. Opening large programs saw no meaningful change. So RAPID Mode would be useless for streaming game assets.

 

Also, given that the PS5 doesn't even use traditional DDR RAM (it uses GDDR VRAM even for the SOC), I have a hard time believing that RAPID Mode could be made to work on it without a major overhaul to that piece of software. It is fairly low-level, requiring a system reboot and creating system services that start with Windows.
