Hello,

first building a NAS and I just need advice on parts. The NAS will be used for our small construction business. we will store Accounting Files, Project Contracts, Billing. we will also use it to store our blueprints. we use a program called planswift and we want all the prints to be stored in the NAS.

here is the parts I have so far. I also need help with what network hub do I need? (I'm not sure I called it the right name). any help will be great thank you!

Get a premade nas for work, don't mess around with diy stuff here. Either get a synology or qnap for just a nas, or go with dell/hp/lenovo if you need a full server.

Do you have AD or anything managing the desktops?

How much data do you need to store?

Id look at could options too. More reliable, and works anywhere.

Whats your backup plan here? What if something happens to the nas?

If you aren't going to get a premade NAS as recommended above, you should get a much lower end CPU with an integrated GPU for this. For example an i3 10100. You'll also want a board with more SATA than just 4, like the Gigabyte B460M DS3H with 6.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i3-10100 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($179.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B460M DS3H Micro ATX LGA1200 Motherboard  ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $259.98
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Synology those are the ones you just buy the storage right?

sorry I'm unfamiliar with what an AD is.

we probably need about 20 TB no more honestly.

I have not searched into backing up the NAS. but is something we will want.

would this support ECC memory? I read this was like a must have.

Yup, just add drives.

Active directory. Its a way to manage a group of windows systems on a network.

What drives are you going to get? Id probably get something like 6x12tB drives to start in a raid 6. Then you have space to grow.

How fast is yout network? Can you do cloud backups here?

Its a nice to have, not really a must. But your build doesn't really support ecc. And that dimm work work as its registered ecc, and am4 doesn't support rdimms.

we have 5 people in the office who are all family members. so you think a AD is something we need?

I was looking at Seagate drives

our speed is about 90 Mbps

I had read that you needed ECC, but a lot of DIY guides didn't have one except for one.

You probalby dont need ad at that size, just seeing what you have. If you want to have centralized management, you probably want something cloud based.

What seagate drives. Id probalby go ironwolf 12/16tb drives here.

Id just get a synology/qnap here. Don't diy, no reason to. The synology will just be a better solution here.

That bandwidth might be enough for cloud backups, and synology makes it easy to backup to most services like b2 or s3.

Or EXOS, they can be found for pretty cheap.
