Hi,

There are a few things to do, the first i would say is hit the activate button and see what happens, if it asks you to call a number dont worry it is just an activation wizard (have used it more times than i care to remember)

You can install a program to find your key and that will be able to tell you what your windows key you have installed is, that would be another good thing to do i would recommend.

Finally you can contact microsoft support and have one of their live chats with you and they will probs ask you for your product key and will be able to explain a little more.

i would try all of the above before going to windows 8.1 because technically speaking you dont have an 8.1 product key, which is the exact reason i am reduced to installing windows 8 first and then upgrading, rather than fresh installing 8.1

Hope this helps as a start

It was already activated when I got it

In that case, go ahead and upgrade to 8.1 and try to activate it then. Might make you call Microsoft to activate it.

You should be on 8.1 anyway. Support for 8 ends very soon. Give it a shot

If 2018/2023 is very soon.... http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?alpha=Windows+8

Where did you buy the computer? If it wasn't from a store and you bought it used or off ebay you got screwed. I've never had issues calling Microsoft to activate a key even when I use my upgrade key on a new computer. If your computer is legit call Microsoft. They will find a way to get it working and fairly quick as well.
