I want to switch to linux, but some of the programs i need will not run natively

If you want a seamless solution the answer is no. Proton, DXVK, and WINE exist but it's not going to be the same as windows. IMO I would develop games cross platform as it will take more work upfront but you will be better off in the long run

Hi!, my name is simon, im a freelance game developer, and since even before windows 11 i have been fed up with windows and have been wanting to change to linux for at least a couple of moths now, the issue is i work with unreal engine 5,4 and many other apps that dont run natively on linux, other apps include things like unity builds for QA testing and things like that, all of these programs have prevented my conversion, is there a seemless way for me to run all of these un supported programs without using things like dual booting to windows or virtual machines? and if the only way is to use a virtual machine is there a way to make the launching of the apps more seemless? (like launching the app from a shortcut and automatically opening the virtual machine for me?)

I have the same issue. No Atmel Studio under Wine, no VS2019, no Google Drive for work unless you use Gnome (which is awful).

 

I want to switch but there's always something that I need which doesn't work, been that way for decades.

Unity is native to Linux, however I don't know if there are any differences between the Linux and Windows Versions.

If your doing testing against Windows Builds, you need to test them against a Native Windows Install, I wouldn't even touch it with a Virtual Machine. Even VM's can occasionally produce unexpected results and are generally considered unsupported.

 

If you want a seamless experience on Linux, my advise would be to move to Unity for Linux and maybe checkout Godot. If this isn't a option, then my advise would be to either dual boot or just stick with Windows.
