Hello all,

I have a question. Can my motherboard; Gigabyte Z170-Gaming K3-CF hold the i9 9900k (or non k) with an update or anything? I think it should be able to seeing as the motherboard is socket 1151 LGA but I'm not sure.

The computer currently has i7 6700k in it at the moment, so I'm just assuming it can have the i9....

I just wonder if it can be upgraded at all...

Gigabyte aren't being helpful ><

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks in advance 🙂

Problem I have... Is that the motherboard is a LGA 1151 and so is the i9 that I was looking at. Is there no possible way of making the board take the i9?

no lol it can however take a i9 7th gen

If its not supported in the bios, it won't work at all or won't work properly.
Intel is locking their CPUs to the chipset, not just the socket.

Thanks guys, you saved me from making a VERY bad mistake ^^; I would've spent upwards of £300 only to find I couldn't use it. Shame though. I mean, I was able to upgrade a Pentium (3rd gen) to an i7 (3rd gen) awhile ago....

you can buy a new mobo tho but i mean like i9s arent worth it unless your video editing

The only CPU you can upgrade to is the Core i7 7700K (which is a very poor upgrade value).

8th and 9th gen CPU's do not work in Z170 boards.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Linux - Fedora
