i didnt even think of that, manufacturers gpu fancurves are horrible, they always seem to prioritize noise over temps, which ends up being hotter and louder than it should be. 🤷‍♂️

Hi,

Been troubleshooting my GF's PC as of late, she only used it for Sims so no heavy load was ever being put on it.

As of last week we are playing SWTOR together and the GPU is being loaded to 100%, temperatures hitting 100C* and the fan being very audible.

Playing at 2560x1440, framerates are stable and smooth aswel.

Weirdly it seems that 1% of GPU usage seems to be linked to 1 C* in temperature increase, idle temps are fine, fan stops as it should on the card and its sits around 50 C*.

Any suggestions to whats going on here?

Bought it brand new in 04-2020, has been in the PC ever since.

Like I said light usage, only to play sims 2.. 🙂 until now.

well how old is the gpu? is it kinda dusty or something ?

do the fans spin?

im just wondering i had the same card (although from sapphire) and temps were like 55-60C… never above 70…

So either this is msi cheaping out on the cooler, or the card is clogged up with dust, or thermal paste going bad… i dunno, mainly depends on how old the card is i guess, even though bad thermal paste can also happen with new'ish cards.

04-2020,

well, check if its dusty… otherwise might think about replacing the thermal paste… keep the thermal pads, those are hard to get and are also probably still ok.

Its dust free, fans spin, they are very audible, like I said bought it brand new in 04-2020 so little over a year old.

Yea it might be worth replacing the thermal paste and checking the thermal pads and make sure they are contacting the heatsink.

Normally I would agree with this right away.

However the logic seems a bit off, if the fan stop function works, and temps sit around 50C* idle with the fans not running, it must be making proper contact?

It could be things like Mosfets and VRMs heating up and causing the issue. Like if the thermal pads for those are not making contact with the heatsink.

not necessarily, my gpu sits at ~35C while idling for example ,,and your issue is still *very* high temps under load, so checking and replacing the paste is your best and easiest bet - imo.

you can try undervolting but that doesnt  really make sense without  checking the paste first, this isnt a very high powered card it shouldnt run this hot, and sometimes they simply mess up the paste job at the factory (also misaligned pads etc)

The only other thing I can think of is like a stuck overclock if you ever messed with that?

I had a 3rd gen intel CPU once that held a 4.3 GHz OC when its base was 3.2. Needless to say I nearly burned it out. I had uninstalled the software and forgot about it.

So i enabled fan tuning in radeon software, simply enabling the slider, problem solved.

MSI Shit fan profile perhaps? 😛

If replacing the thermal paste doesn't work, try reducing the clock speed and voltage by 5-7% and the power limit down around the same, it should get the card running 10c cooler or so.
