My internet connection isn't that good, and my family is completely against buying a switch for the whole house so I want to buy one just for me (those small ones that go for like 40$ top). What I want to know is if that is going to slow down my connection too much or would I barely notice. We have 20 mbps download, 10 upload.

Edit: I don't know s**t about switches, I've never used one.

what do you need the switch for? what's the difference between buying one "just for you" and one "for the whole house"?

anyway it shouldn't affect your connection speed. cheap switches are known to be a little unreliable though.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

The difference is that we would need a bigger one, and no one in my house cares about "gigabiting" the whole house, so I want it for me so I transfer data between computers in my room(it's a hassle but I think that's my only option)

Unless you have all 4 ports on the small switch being blasted at one time, I don't think you'll notice a a difference in connection speed.

Your connection between your PCs may be fine if you are only using 2 at a time, but again if you are transferring data between all of them at once then you may see performance dips on a cheap switch.

This is all only if you have all 4 ports filled. If you only have, lets say a pc and a console, then if would definitely be an upgrade in connection over WiFi. Or if only 2 ports are being used at once. Just depends, cheap switches can be finicky.
