Hello all,

I am a theoretical physicist in need of an upgrade. I recently ran into the problem of not having enough ram to handle the numerical simulations I do at work, so I think it is a time for an upgrade. My main goal with this build is to kind of make an entry level workstation that would help me in my research. But I am also am a gamer and want my home workstation to be able to handle games at high or ultra graphics.( I know I am kind of asking for a white whale here but please help me)

Budget (including currency):  I would like to keep it between $US4000 and $4500

Country: Canada possibly moving to Belgium soon

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: I want dual windows arch Linux on two separate hard drives. I will mainly use this rig for numerical simulations with high precision  of non linear differential equations. I usually write them in C++, but sometimes I use  Mathematica, maple, and Python. Also I am a hobby photographer so some light load image processing . Finally I have the gaming bug mainly play single player RPGs and would like to be able to run most of them on ultra or high graphics.

Other details: I would be running a dual monitor set up. These are the components I have picked so far  https://newegg.io/f0af139

I think the parts you have chosen are good enough...but you should also use a ssd if you can fit it in ur budget

I'd suggest you to be patient and grab a better graphics card such as an RTX 3080 for around the same price of that 6700 XT. If you do, I'd also get a higher PSU (better safe than sorry). The rest seems fine and the nvme stick you have is a great storage solution (I don't know what the other guy is saying). In the future, using https://pcpartpicker.com/ will help you find better deals and it'll also check for compatibility issues. Cheers

Do you have any suggestions for the PSU, because l feel I know nothing of how to match one to my system

I'm sorry, I was thinking of something else. The PSU in your list works perfectly with your system and is going to be enough if you plan on running the CPU and GPU at stock speeds. If you want to overclock, a 1000w is recommended. 2 options :

https://www.newegg.ca/evga-supernova-1000-g5-220-g5-1000-x1-1000w/p/N82E16817438160?IsFeedbackTab=true&Item=N82E16817438160#scrollFullInfo

https://www.newegg.ca/seasonic-focus-plus-gold-ssr-1000fx-1000w/p/N82E16817151210?Item=N82E16817151210&Description=1000w&cm_re=1000w-_-17-151-210-_-Product

I'm not 100% if they are compatible with the system. PCpartpicker can also check if the available ports on the PSU are compatible with your system. It'll give you a warning message at the bottom of the list if there's a problem.

I did recreate the build in PCpartpicker and I will definitely wait and get that RTX which you suggested, and might as well take the bigger power supply I'd like to have the option to overclock. Thanks I really appreciate the feedback! This is my first build and since I am dumping so much money it's good to have someone check it over.

you seek epyc land

https://www.ebay.com/itm/402800598322 Epyc 7302 16 core 32 thread zen 2 cpu with baseclock of 3ghz

https://www.ebay.com/itm/124777994344

A gigabyte sp3 board, supposedly its eatx from the listing but idk about that

https://m.aliexpress.com/item/33002249520.html ecc ddr4, you will want the 2400mhz 16gb option which is 64.85$, so 16x8 config = 518$ for 128gb of ecc ddr4 2400mhz

And the rest of the parts are in this pcpartpicker https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/WMzggt

Gpu is up to you

And supposedly p300 can unofficialy support eatx

Weird build? Yes

Futureproofing with the ram? Yes upto 256gb if you are gonna stick with the 16gb 2400 sticks and its ecc so less bsoding and ram errors

Do i reccomend going dual socket? Absolutely not, unless if you are getting more ram slots but what case can even fit a dual socket?

And if you can mod your bios to use agesa 1.0.0.2 and a cpu that supports agesa 1.0.0.2 (es cpus, and cpus that end in 004) you can overclock your epyc via a modded zenstates (bypassed vendor check so it works on all mobos)

Are you planning on doing any overclocking?

And what are your current system specs?

Cause you might be able to reuse something from your current system like storage for example

I am currently working on lenovo y50-70 laptop , and to give it credit so far it was able to handle everything. But I recently started a new project at work that requires me to run simulations with 30 sigfigs precision and even though i upgraded to 16 GBs a few years ago it was not enough.

I would like to have the option to  overclock, but honestly I would run it stock unless I am really struggling for performance. Besides  in my current machine the ram runs out waaay before i hit the limits of the CPU. That's why i chose 2x32G with two slots free if i am in need of an update later.

Thank you! I will look into it! It is very tempting it is much cheaper than what I made.
