Where do I place Windows?

Hi guys and gals,

 

I'm quite new in here - as in I made an account just to ask for help about this particular question - so if it is misplaced, please do let me know.

 

I am planning a "summer cleaning" of my laptop used primarily for studying (gonna start my masters degree in mechanical engineering in 2 months time), and to get the most performance of the system I have considered the following:

 

I'm running a Thinkpad E580 with a 256 GB m.2 SSD and upgraded it with a 1 TB FireCuda SSHD. I was considering making a partition on the SSHD for the Windows installation and boot files, use the SSD for program files (like CAD software and a few games and stuff) and use the remaining space on the SSHD for documents and stuff.

 

Do you guys have Any recomendations on how to maximize the performance of the system?

Put Windows and software on the SSD. You can put some of your most played games on there too. Everything else goes on the SSHD.

The operating system goes on the SSD. Don't overthink it.

I'd do the opposite, actually. Installing Windows on the fastest drive (in this case, the m.2 SSD) will give you the best boot times, and will overall make the system feel snappier and more responsive. Larger games and other files that you access less frequently should go on the SSHD.

I have a 1TB Kingston A2000 M.2 NVMe where I’ve partitioned 250GB for Windows & 750GB for Programs.

 

Windows was always going on this drive (I also have a 500GB SATA SSD & 2TB HDD in my rig).
