Router in a MAC filtered network

Hooterr

Hello everyone,

I got an interesting situation. I'm living in a student dorm, and we have a MAC filtered network there. That means that whenever I want to plug in a new device in, I have to send its MAC address to the admin. I don't want to bother them all the time because I tend to have different devices over, fixing something on friend's computer etc.

I do know some networking stuff, but I want to have someone double check if I'm on the right path here.

I want to get some cheap router (e.g. TP-LINK TL-WR841N), give its MAC to the admin once and for all, and plug my devices to that router from now on. My understanding is that such a router has a NIC on the WAN port and will act as a single device from their network's point of view. That would mean that I have my own LAN network and I can use DHCP server on my router and all the traffic will go through to their network (and Internet) from any of my devices.

Is that going to work or am I just talking nonsense?

Yup it can work. Some routers also have ability to use a user defined mac address, so you wouldnt even have to contact them to get them to add your router to their allowed network list.
