VRM. Why is there a +2 phase?

I have a x570 Tomahawk. It has 12+2 phases VRM. I understand what a VRM does in terms of power delivery, but are the two phases working at the same time as the 12 phases, or just chillin' in the background? Why is it +2? 馃

Thanks

The first number is for Vcore. The second is for igpu/SOC. Memory is not typically listed. The x570 tomahawk has a single phase memory vrm.
