My grandfather has a Lenovo Ideapad running Windows 10. He always uses a USB mouse, and has asked me to disable the trackpad for him as he keeps hitting it when typing on the keyboard causing the cursor to jump around.

 

I went to "Mouse" in the settings app, then selected "More mouse options" then "Hardware", selected the device which represents the trackpad, and selected "Disable Device". There was previously text which said "This device is working", it now says "This device is disabled (Code 22)". However even after a reboot the trackpad still works!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

Some machines have an Fn+Fx shortcut to disable it, or even a dedicated button. Other than that maybe there's a 2nd device to disable in device manager.
