Could have bonkered CPU/Mobo

Kennethk91

Hey so need some major help, just last night I put in a ryzen 7 2700x with a GIGABYTE B450M DS3H V2, all were working fine and dandy. My new case shows up go put everything together inside the Montech X2 MESH case.

While installing I had a bit of an accident, I had to take off the CPU cooler for more room while lifting up on the cooling block the CPU socket came up with it and the lever on the mobo was down. I checked the pins all looked okay but that still shouldn't cause my following issue should it?

When I go to insert the mobo psu connections I get no indication of power. No lights on the mobo nothing. Even tried a psu with it from my test rig I knew that was working. I get it's possible I may have shorted the mobo but I should still get power to the board if I screwed up the CPU socket right?

I tried unplugging the CMOS battery also and putting it back in nothing. Would much appreciate some thought as I know it has to be mobo or CPU at this point.

was detached from the board it's pretty much dead, forever.

If it was just the CPU then it could be fine, unless it was powered on of course.

Sorry I miss typed their I meant to say the CPU chip lifted out not the socket it's self.

Does something feel loose than its should be? Socket, cpu, etc?

The cpu or cooler?

Ethier way it's "hard to get wrong" if you will when installing amd cpu or cooler and actually i didn't think you could over tightened ot

The cooler, it booted for like half a second on the replacement board but now nothing at all and I securely checked everything was connected no idea what's up with this board. I have it sitting outside the case on the box trying for power, I doubt cardboard could be the reason it's not booting lol.

I'm really stumped at this point.

Does the board gives you some errors code? It should be some beeps or a little led lights up you can check the manual

OK - Be sure to check the mounting standoffs in the case related to the board itself and make sure nothing is where it shoudn't be when the board is in place. Every mounting stud/standoff should be at a mounting hole in the board, not just touching the board on it's back somewhere causing a potential dead-short.

Be sure if you do see a standoff where it shouldn't be to check for any damaged components in that area, it's easy to scratch and knock components loose from a board and disable it.
In a few instances, depending on what got knocked it's possible to kill it outright so remove the board, see where all the standoffs are in relation to the board once it's in the case and for any possible damage to components. If there is a standoff where it shoudn't be, remove it and remount in another place where it's supposed to go or just don't put it back in.

If you happened to bump something on the board with the cooler while removing it, that could result in the same so look all that over carefully too.
The chip just coming up and out of the board with the cooler shoudn't have hurt anything if you didn't do any physical damage to the chip when that happened.

Check all that and let us know if you find something and what you find.
