nodejs to C++, is it worth it?

Over the last few years I've become decently versed in javascript, specifically in nodejs. Ive been considering learning C++ as a next step but is it worth it? What advantages (other than speed) does it have?

It's overall just a good idea to learn more languages. Many concepts spill over so it becomes much easier to pick up new languages as you go

Even if you never really get much use out of the language it self, the concepts contained within the language are extremely valuable. It allows you to better understand what is going on behind the scenes in other languages so you can judge different possible implementations with a more critical eye. C++ essentially teaches you what most languages can't. Additionally, any time you need to get close to the hardware or OS having knowledge of C and C++ is immensely valuable. 

 

Also you should take the opportunity to learn any language you can. Its one more tool at your disposal if you learn it.

Speed is one thing, more control would be the other. You're much closer to the metal, which means you can/must make decisions that are otherwise hidden/handled by the runtime. Obviously this comes with a learning curve and might require more boilerplate for cases where you don't actually need that kind of control. But as others have said, it might give you a better understanding of how stuff works under the hood, which can also help you improve your skills in other languages, too.

as a counter argument the async nature of nodejs + its higher level syntax means you can develop far faster. IF you need speed you can create c bindings and call from node.

Absolutely. Modern languages have many features that can make development of complex things both easier and less error prone. Coroutines (e.g. async/await in C#) come to mind. They make multi-threaded programming easier to get into while also keeping the program structure less complex, compared to manual thread management. Functionality like garbage collection helps to avoid memory leaks where in C++ you have to pay a lot more attention to where stuff gets allocated (though modern C++ does have tools to help with that). Especially in a multi-threaded environment manual memory management can quickly become an absolute nightmare.

 

In some cases you may need to be an expert in C++ to be able to get comparable or better performance, where even a decently competent developer can get >90% there in another language, simply because they come with features that make things easier to comprehend and implement. But you may pay a price in terms of overall application performance. For example in C++ you can (or must) control when memory gets allocated and freed, whereas in languages like Java you have this sort of black box that frees memory "whenever", which can end up hurting application performance.

 

If you need absolute control and best possible performance then C++ may be the better choice. The flip side is that for many applications you don't actually benefit from that type of control and, as you said, the price you pay in terms of development speed simply doesn't make it worth it. At the end it comes down to picking the right tool for the job.

 

However, as has been said, it's still a good thing to learn simply to get a more low level understanding of how things work under the hood.
