I'll be buying the last part needed for my computer next week, DDR4 RAM, and it is proving quite a problematical issue when making my mind up. Price vs speed.

They all have a named mhz and cas, so I'll be looking for something like 3600mhz and 16cas, but I would like to overclock but I and wondering do all the brands bin their RAM so what you see is only what you get?

I was thinking G Skill but as there are just so many steps of mhz and Cas for sale I'm thinking these are what you see you only get types of RAM

But Crucial seems to just sell the 3600mhz 16cas, so these might be the ones most likely to not have binned for maxed mhz, am I right?

What brand?

All consumer level RAMs are overclockable.

well I appreciate all the replies so far but as I not even sure how to word my question I'll word it another way

my ROG Strix X570-E Gaming defines the tech details for RAM as

Quote

DDR4 4600(O.C)/4400(O.C)/4266(O.C.)/4133(O.C.)/4000(O.C.)/3866(O.C.)/3733(O.C.)/3600(O.C.)/3466(O.C.)/3400(O.C.)/3200/3000/2933/2800/2666/2400/2133 MHz Un-buffered Memory

DDR4 5100(O.C)/4866(O.C)/4800(O.C.)/4600(O.C)/4500(O.C)/4400(O.C)/4333(O.C.)/4266(O.C.)/4200(O.C.)/4133(O.C.)/4000(O.C.)/3866(O.C.)/3600(O.C.)/3400(O.C.)/3200(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666/2400/2133 MHz Un-buffered Memory

The RAM brands of Crucial and Corsair are listed as the cheapest for a 3600mhz 16cas (below 100ukp), whilst other brands can be 50% and more in cost

But which brand of the two are more likely to go above 3600mhz? Would either of them remotely hit the maximum 5100mhz O.C. my board lists?

Or should I be looking at different brands for that max O.C. potential?

Or just go by what I see in the shop is roughly going to be what I get, and at best a 4000mhz is only to get 4200mhz O.C.?

nb 14 CAS sells at the same added premium rate as anything above 3600mhz and I'm thinking all these premium added expenses are driving me bonkers. Especially if I can avoid paying for it.

No. You'll never be able to OC that high. You'd have to buy RAM that was already much faster.

However, since you're on AMD, none of that matters anyways. You need RAM that matches the infinity fabric clock (FLCK). Anything faster will actually give you *worse* performance, because the FLCK will go 2:1, making even 5100MHz RAM effectively like 2666MHz.

I'm not sure what exact CPU you have but the FCLK tops out at 1800MHz on Zen 2 and 1900MHz on Zen 3. It's possible to OC the FCLK, but results vary. Zen 2 can sometimes go as high as 1933MHz, and Zen 3 can get to 2000MHz if you have a golden chip.

DDR means double data rate, which means it can do two transfers per cycle. Because of this, RAM manufacturers advertise their RAM as double the actual clockspeed, so 3600MHz, for example, is *actually* 1800MHz and 3600 MT/s (mega-transfers/sec).

Long and short, if you want the absolute fastest RAM, you first need to find out how high you can get the FCLK on your particular chip, and then you should buy RAM that advertises a clockspeed double that. If you can only go to 1800MHz on the FCLK, the 3600MHz is the absolute fastest RAM you can get. Anything else will be slower, even if it has higher clockspeeds.

Well the chip is the 5800x, all I seem to be reading/hearing for AMD is 3600mhz cl16 is more or less it, more and less = lower performance

That some design styles of RAM are better suited for Intel whilst others for AMD.

Brands well are just where they got the die batch for a production run, but if it has a stated mhz & cl it only matters if it runs on AMD

So what I understand so far is I should focus on is what Brand style is for AMD and limit the results  for 3600mhz & cl 16

From that list of RAM narrow what I chose based on current price and availability as they are all going to be the same under the cosmetic looks. Cosmetic RGB only mattering if its not overpriced.

Gee I'm getting too old for this.

There are only like 3 companies that actually manufacture RAM and everybody else just slaps their logo on.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Samsung B-die kits. That's my recommendation.

3600mhz timings will be 16-16-16-36. These will do 4000 with just a bump in voltage.

Beyond 4000mhz, you want higher end kits starting at 4267mhz 19-19-19-39.

Since the 5800X is a single CCX, the Infinity Fabric ratio won't have a big impact running 2:1 or 1:1 when speaking of a 1000mhz memory OC difference 3600 vs 4600 in example.

You're not too old for this either. Most of the guys I learned from are in their 60's and older. 😉

So who are the three companies, what are their rankings to each other, and who do they sell to?
