What AIO is best for my build?

Budget (including currency): $1200 USD

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: VR Gaming

Other details: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NdJrgt

Hello I'm new here and building my first PC. I don't know which AIO would be the best option for what I have or if I'd be better off with an air cooler. I haven't picked a case yet because I want a case that will work best with my components instead of making them fit a case.

What case are you going with?

A good air cooler is usually about the same as a 240 AIO. If you get a nice mesh airflow case, air cooling could be a better fit.

I haven't decided on a case yet as I'm looking for a case that will be the best fit for my parts. I don't want to have to try and cram or get different parts because they don't fit in my case.

IMO for 1200 dollars including a GPU the best option is a prebuilt

Big nerd.

Don't need an AIO for a 3700X. It's a 65W TDP CPU that doesn't boost past 4.2Ghz.

I'd also like to point out that it doesn't hold any value in 2021, get a 5600X.

An AIO for a 65w CPU seems a bit silly.

Want small formfactor? Or a fancy case?

Or just something cheap and decent like a P360 or similar?

I think it's funny you criticizing my experience with the exact processor when you're still rocking a 1500X. 🤦‍♂️

Consider using the stock cooler.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

some minor changes id consider. Save some on a similarly performing SSD, pick up a nicer PSU for 7$, and get some Dimms that will overclock well if you want to get into memmory overclocking at some point.

either picking up singlerank Rev B or dual Rank Rev E. Depending on the batch you get.

not sure if you are familiar with the powerdraw of both the 5600x and 3700x. but they both kinda sip power.

and 100w really isnt a lot.

edit: also id consider lowering the voltage you are using. While Zen 2 has been fairly resilient, its not in the range of voltages that are regarded as "safe". If you are using PBO2 to overclock, it may be allright. but allcore overclocks, thats a tad much. Id recommend staying below 1.3v

its an issue of thermal density, something both Zen 2 and Zen 3 deal with.

you are gonna run allright temps, and even be able to overclock using the stock cooler. And a budget aircooler will allow you to make the most of the CPU.

If I'm hitting 80°C on a 280mm AIO at 1.325V, where is this thermal headroom you speak of for overclocking? 🤦‍♂️

Not everyone is running test benches, some of us actually have cases. Even with a stock cooler on a test bench you wouldn't be able to sustain much more than 4-4.2Ghz under load.

it was entirely because it was allready included in Hermans build. also it doesnt list price, so its entirely placeholder. Granted i could have pointed that out.

good to know.

Don't need 32GB's for a VR build.

Might aswell. 16gb isnt exactly sufficient for all titles. And you get to roll the dice on getting Rev B dimms.

which:

  1. Perform well
  2. if you ever want to touch memmory overclocking, they overclock well.

Not necessary for an RTX 3060 based system.

i mean you could spend 7$ less for a Leadex, or spend a little extra for a GF1.

if we are being completely honest, the Focus GM you picked is kinda silly considering what it is. (its listed as a Focus FM, but thats not sold anymore). Especially if you are gonna take the "neccesity" argument.

like you could get something cheap an nice like these:

Corsair CXF 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (CP-9020216-NA) - PCPartPicker

Corsair CXF 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply (CP-9020226-NA) - PCPartPicker

i could, but i was really just pointing out the contradiction of saying that an AIO for a 65w CPU isnt neccesary, when you then go on to recommend an AIO for a 65w TDP CPU.......

Not everyone is running test benches, some of us actually have cases. Even with a stock cooler on a test bench you wouldn't be able to sustain much more than 4-4.2Ghz under load.

Also doesn't OCing Zen 3 hurt single core performance? If OP is playing games why would he OC? Just turn on PBO and call it a day

ït does that stock if you werent aware. Well it does more, but assuming some frequency drop for whatever reason.

thats 15c of headroom present. Also ideally you wanna tune through PBO, and not run Allcore overclocks. Also id like to again point out that 1.325v on an allcore overclock (if thats what you are running), is not really ideal in terms of degredation. (tho some chips offcourse handle voltage better than others)

using an AIO doesnt really help the inherent thermal density issue. And you can get the most using a cheap aircooler anyways.

Isn't chip degradation correlated with sustained operating temperature? not voltage? That's what it takes to run stable.

OC through PBO2 and you can improve performance across the board.

really if you wanna overclock, memmory is what you want to tune.

also, yeah, thermal density. Its why Zen 2 and Zen 3 were "hot" for the amount of wattage they outputted.

also it applies to both Zen 2 and Zen 3. So doesnt really help your contradiction much sadly. Again im just pointing out you are being a bit silly and contradictory with the cooling requirements.

depends on the way it degrades. Temperature is certainly a factor.

You can degrade through too much current (afaik this isnt how N7 typically degrades, could be wrong, i havent looked at specifically the mechanism it degrades by).

but it can also degrade through too much Voltage. Buildzoid touched upon this a bit when he was testing degredation on his degraded 3700x, (which degraded very early on). it finally died through using too high voltage for a couple of days. His sample was apperantly quite sturdy.
