> $300 Minecraft server - 1U, Tower, or build?

Hello, I am wanting to have a machine dedicated to running as a Minecraft server. I don't have a lot of experience in the world of enterprise equipment. Ideally I want the server to have a minimum of 16Gb of RAM, preferably 24+. 

 

Looking through labgophers I found some good deals under $300 for both 1U and Tower systems, with the 1U being the better deal of the two. I don't have a rack, and if I were to get a 1U machine I would buy rails and mount it to the underside of my desk.

 

My questions are: Would the 1U be too loud to sit underneath a desk in my living room? If I were to get a 1U machine would I be able to put in a hard drive/SSD with some form of Linux server into it with no issue? Lastly, for this price range would it be cheaper to buy something like a E5 2670 and build off of a platform like that?

1. Buy an old dell optiplex with i5 or i7
2. smack 16GB of ram in it
3. install mineOS
4. profit

But fr a dell optiplex can be pretty compact and most use a fanless or quiet fan design and they exist everywhere

You don't need a monitor to manage and look at it. You can do that from the webUI that comes with that distro.

Do you think there would be any kind of issue if I used a tower that had an i3 vs the i5/i7? I'm not quite sure on how minecraft/java utilizes cores

None at all. It just depends on the amount of players you will have on that server. I'd even say 16GB is overkill for RAM.

I think a i3 machine could do fine tbh because a minecraft server uses next to nothing and can run on the potatoest of potatoes
