Tplink router hagging/unresponsive

Sh3ikhX

Hi,

I have tplink TL WR840N router.

Nearly after every hour or so my router gets hannged/lagged and the it becomes unresponsive. The pings to the router my devices get spiked upto 600 to 1000ms and packet loss becomes 100%.

I couldn't understand why this happens i ahve check these things:

  • No heatup issue
  • No other devices connected
  • No application or software is using the bandwidth
  • Even without an Internet connection it does that.

What could be the problem and what can i do to resolve this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Its a very low-end router and getting a bit long in the tooth.  If you've had it a while capacitors in the router or the PSU might be failing.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

Have you tried rebooting it?

Which version of the WR840N? If you want to extend the life of it, maybe 3rd party firmware might be useful, although, it's very dated and you'll likely get better performance from a total upgrade.

Please take down the image as it contains your MAC and public IP address.

This router/version isn't supported by DD-WRT or OpenWRT. You can try performing a reset to defaults, reinstall of the latest official firmware, followed by reset to defaults. Then configure as you want.

Time to let it go and upgrade to something else.

As in it's an ISP-supplied device? Which make/model?

How long does the CPU sit at 99-100%?

Then if it’s still causing problems you should take that up with the ISP. Anything that they provide you with that is causing issues should be addressed by them.
