will a higher resolution monitor lower frame rate / reduce performance?

lets say, i have an gtx 1050 ti with a 720p monitor and i upgrade to a 1080p monitor.

 

also if it does reduce performance, will a second monitor reduce even more performance?

Yes, higher resolutions are more demanding, but 1080p should run fine on a 1050 Ti on Medium Settings.

A second monitor would only reduce performance if you're trying to run games in ultrawide using both displays. Merely having two connected at the same time should not affect performance in the slightest.

you can actually still run your games at 720p with the 1080 monitor and have no performance reduction.

Having a second monitor connected simply showing the desktop environment already increases GPU load and  temps, so of course it reduces a few FPS in games, at last it did when I experimented years ago.
