R9 290 Crossfire with GS700 watt

ValdemarBonde

Hello forum,

I have a Corsair Gs700 watt psu and a r9 290. I'm thinking about getting another 290.

Can i run fine on my 700 watt psu? :)

Rest of the specs are in my sig.

Nope, Not enough connectors and your cpu would bottleneck.

+1  although i'm not sure about the bottlenecking part

i would recommend getting an RM750 before you get another 290.

Would it be smarter to get like a 780ti or something?

Up to you, sell that R9 290 and pony up the extra cash for a GTX780 Ti then. BTW, what's wrong with the R9 290 in the first place? Not getting the performance you want?

vs the 290 you already have NO you own a latest generation card if you need to upgrade wait till the next generation even though the 290 is still a beast.

I would get atleast a 850 watt psu and even that is barely enough I had an 290x that could easily pull 400+ watt

The reason I'm thinking about upgrading is because of the new somewhat-affordable Samsung 28" 4k. I really wanna try 4k :D I don't know if i should wait for next gen or whatever but I don't think a single 290 is enough for 4k gaming.

Honestly speaking, IF you're serious about 4K gaming, no single GPU card would be enough, what you'd want is a dual card/GPU setup at the very least because pushing gaming at 4K res requires at least two present gen high end cards.....one of which you already have. This is a 4K gaming benchmark review, do note the numbers posted by each single GPU setup, while some less GPU intensive games can be done satisfactorily with just a high ned card, two such cards would guarantee higher framerate for a smoother gameplay (when SLi/CF work that is)

I have 2 R9 290 crossfire + i7 3820 powered by Corsair AX860i.

I haven't used an actual power meter, but I did take a look to numbers shown trough the Corsair Link, since this is a digital PSU.

Under OCCT PSU load test, which is something like furmark + linpack, I got around 550 Watts.

Then I tried the Valley benchmark and got around 700-750 Watts... So 700 Watt PSU might be pushing it.

I don't know how much that 6GB version is going to cost though, still it's up to you. Some say with 4K gaming, 3GB is just enough, so having an R9 290 with 4GB of VRAM put you in better shape for 4K gaming. Either you dump that R9 290 and get 2x GTX780 3GB/6GB, or, you can simply buy another matching R9 290 to CF.......quite doubtful that that Corsair GS700 W PSU can handle two high end cards though.

Yeah I was a bit surprised too. Though I'm not sure if the OCCT PSU test worked right, the gpus themselves probably use around 500W and the rest of the system around 200W under heavy load.

Did anyone even look up the GS700? Including the OP. You have the PSU. You can physically check the unit to see what connectors are available. Seems like everyone is discussing the Wattage rather than the specifics of the unit. Except Nicholas and mrpants of course.

Newegg and HardwareSecrets list the GS700 as having 2x 6+2pin PCIE connectors. So that would be a No.

Heh? I've done something stupid, I'd assumed that it had sufficient PCIe power connectors. D'oh, should have realized that the Corsair GS series 700W PSU's don't usually come with more than two sets of PCIe connectors. My Seasonic SS-850AT Bronze unit comes with 4 sets PCIe connectors. I must make a mental note that lower than 850W PSU's may not have more than two PCIe connectors.

Okay, I think I'll just keep my 290. If i buy a 4k monitor i guess i can play on medium settings, right? And if i feel like playing on higher settings i suppose I could just put it down to 1440p? :D

Yep, you can prolly get away with Medium setting for some games, but for most games that aren't GPU intensive, like Dead Space series or RE series, you can do very high setting, perhaps with no AA though.

Okay, I'll probably get the 4k display then. I was looking at buying a 1440p but the new Samsung one is like 100 dollars more for 4k so I kinda want that instead :D

1440p will still look fine on a 4k monitor, right?

Yeah 1440p on 4k monitor shouldn't look too bad, 2560x1440 is pretty high res already after all :)

Also at 4k you don't really need to use AA.
