Backplane madness

Hello, I want to build a storage server for video editing. I will need a lot of storage, so i need a 24bay chassis. Since I'm not from US or Canada, the best options for me are to buy from china. I found this supplier https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32825182421.html

And it look like it will fit my needs, but there is some obscure options about the backplane that I've been trying to understand. Can someone explain the difference between the mini backplane models and Expander backplane models ?

THe epanders will make it so there are only 1 or 2 sas cables instead of 6 cables, so you don't need as many ports on your hba/raid card.

 

6g is probably fine for home use speed wise, esp since your probably going with hdds which are pretty slow.

 

Id probalby go 6g or 12g expander backplane.

 

Id really suggest getting a bigger brand server if you can as there normally better, so something like a supermicro.

how much storage are you expecting to need and what is your budget for this build?

we have many people here that think they need a lot and also a lot of drive bays but it usually turns out to be much less then it initially seems so how many TB of storage are you aiming for?

 

Also will this server be just to store the files when everything is done or are you also expecting to edit videos directly off the server?
