Ehhh I’d just keep it with windows 7.

If you’d prefer modern security features then either windows 10 or Linux. Just for casual use honestly Linux might be a good option, nothing complex just bone stock Ubuntu would be a good choice for that machine.

I still daily use windows 7 on my thinkpad x220 simply because it’s what it’s meant for and I don’t use or really need any of the modern features of windows 10. It runs the best for the hardware and leaves it the most useful it can be.

But again, an alternative would be Linux.

is windows 10 faster than windows 7? *just to clarify ? are there any benefits of windows 10?

Windows 8, 8.1 or 10. Basically anything that isn't over a year out of date in terms of security.

Windows 7 is insecure and shouldn't be used for anything connected to a network. If Windows 10 is too heavy for your laptop, you could consider a Linux install instead.

It hasn't received any security updates since January 2020 outside of those that purchased ESU Licencing. It's vulnerable to multiple nasty exploits that will not be fixed so should be avoided if it's going to be connected to a network. People using insecure operating systems is exactly why WannaCry hit as hard as it did, as well as facilitating delayed attacks when an infected machine connected to a new network

There are no more Microsoft updates for security on windows 7, you’d have to rely on third party antivirus if you’re a user at risk of getting viruses.

Not even about viruses, it's exploits and vulnerabilities that can allow the machine to be compromised, for things like direct control, data theft etc. as well as facilitating the spread of viruses and malware Anti virus can do nothing to fix security holes in the OS itself.

This is less of a concern for a home user. This is more of an issue for targets worth targeting, businesses and data centers. The average user even at the hands of ransomware wouldn’t really see the OS facilitate an exploit used, the user is the exploit.

WannaCry wasn't a targeted attack and look how much damage it did. It spread through an exploit in the OS that wasn't patched on Windows XP due to it being EoL and spread on its own without any action required from the user or the attacker. Even considering targeted/semi-targeted attacks, less of a concern is not no concern at all.

The amount of issues caused by people using insecure operating systems during the WannaCry spread should make it clear to everyone why it's a bad idea to use Windows 7 over a year after security updates stopped. OP should switch to 8, 8.1, 10 or Linux, there's no valid reason to use Windows 7 anymore.

but wont windows 10 affect the laptop's performace??

If it does, you can try 8 or 8.1 or use a Linux distro like Ubuntu which would likely perform better than Windows 7.

I have a hard stance that no one should be using Windows 7 without ESU licensing.

The others are right, 7 is a bit of a risk these days (though there are easy ways to make it secure) and Win10 is a bloated mess of an OS

Win8 was a disaster, and 8.1 sort of fixed the issue.

But what you really want...is Windows 9!

https://www.eastcoast.hosting/Windows9/

(I use it on my main system, it's perfect. All the benefits of 7 and 8/8.1 and 10, none of the BS associated with 10 or 8/8.1)

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.
