So I have a 12v old ass case fan from a P2 machine. Could I plug it into an rgb header to get power? 12v .15A is the fan spec. Plugged into the modern 5v header it feels like someone with emphysema blowing out birthday candles. (If the fan fries early, don't really care, trying to just reuse when possible)

FAN headers are 12v, 5v header are for RGB.

On the contrary, if you put it in 5v it will run slower, not as you described.

Interesting..... So then one of my fans is mislabelled....

Now show us the end of the cable and the molex/sata power connector....

Fan HEADERS are 12v because fans with headers run on 12v. 5v fans take power from something external.

Red is 12v or 5v DC depending on the fan. What motherboard do you have?

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

ASRock B450 Pro4..... I will say the fan spins at 3000rpm at full tilt and sounds a little like an idle server.

Your original post had mixed the voltages, and also otherwise contradicts this latest. 3000rpm is high speed, but probably won't kill fan. You could DC control it to only run with 5V, both in order to keep it living longer, and lower the speeds.
