Hi all,

Just joined the forum because I ran into a very concerning issue with the Nvidia studio drivers for the RTX 2070! I didn't know where else to share this, but I know it needs to be public info (I couldn't find any info about this when I searched). Basically, I was running into crazy high temperatures in my rig-- Ryzen 5800x running at 65+ idle, PSU and CPU fans constantly ramping up and down, etc. which I at first thought was due to high temps that new Ryzen CPUs run at. I eneded up upgrading my CPU cooler and case fans, which didn't make a huge difference, and my PSU fan was still constantly ramping up!

I didn't at all think that it could be a GPU issue, since this would happen at idle and during CPU-heavy workflows (video editing)--on top of that, the GPU fans were rarely if ever ramping up as well. But just to be safe, I decided to check my GPU temps and found that my RTX 2070 was idling at 80C constantly! Not good, especially considering that if this were to die I would definitely not be able to get a new one anytime soon.

I couldn't figure out at all what the issue was with those temperatures, and just as a fluke decided to change from the Studio driver (462.31) to the Game-ready driver (466.11). I had been experiencing these high temps and high noise issues for months at this point--and through multiple driver upgrades--and was shocked to see that after I changed to the game ready driver all my fans immediately quieted, and my CPU+GPU idle temps went down to 40C.

I am sure that more experienced people would have done troubleshooting much quicker, and I'm feeling dumb for not realizing this until now! But either way, I think this is a significant issue, especially considering the GPU market right now, and I wanted to get the word out ASAP.  Has anyone else had issues like this? Is this a known bug? Is there somewhere else I can share this info to make sure people know about it and don't fry their cards?

@palluvian - Sounded like your 3D accelerated clocks were stuck. In addition, this was a known Ampere issue (see below) if you are using a high refresh adaptive sync monitor.

When you said you checked the temperatures (at idle), were the clocks at idle or boost?
