Hello,

I'm a photographer attempting to setup a NAS server for home use. it would

Be used for general file archiving as well as my entire photo archive. The setup I was looking at is the Asustor AS5304T. My current router is a zyxel ex3510-b0, now it appears my router only has 1gb ports while the nas has-two 2.5gb ports. Would this setup still be optimal for what I would be needing it for?

This is very new territory for me, so please let me know what other info may be needed to help make a better decision. Looking forward to any advice, thanks!

Id problby get. synoloyg as they normally have better software, but the astor ones willwork fine.

2.5gb ports will work at 1g just fine.

Is there an greater loss of speed using 1gb over 2.5? And would I be able to edit photos from the server itself without much lag??

thanks for the speedy response!

Yea running at 1gb will be slower.

Id probably keep current projects on a local ssd, and then move older photos to the nas. Id sy photos are noticable slower on any hdd backed storage solution.

If needed it would be great to access it via iPhone/iPad if I’d want to pull any photos or files while on the go.

How do you store nd mnge your photos?

I know synology nasaes have reasonly good software for mobile apps, but it wont work well if you use software like lightroom

I use Lightroom for all editing, storing and managing.

I import all photos straight into Lightroom.

Mobile support then is gonna be a pain then. Lightroom really isn't made for that(at least the classic version)

Id probably skip the nas then and just get some more hdds for inside your pc

So, I use Lightroom for all editing and storing of edited photos which are all in my Lightroom catalog. All originals are stored on 2 g-tech drives.

would that make any difference if wanting to pull photos from the nas instead of Lightroom?

So what is your goal with the nas? If you need more storage id just get bigger or more external hdds.

Normlly the way lightroom stores data doesn't make it easy to access from other devices without lightroom.

It’s going to be used for mass storage as well as redundancy in the off chance any drives fail. Also if I were to travel I could access any of my files whether it’s photos or documents.
