1800$ Budget Gaming Rig - My First Time

Hey all !

I'll use what I've seen in the pinned threads and other threads to make it easier, clearer and faster :)

Budget & Aim : As mentioned, I'm planning on building a gaming rig this summer, with a budget around 1800$. Gaming meaning : BF4, Assassin's Creed, Far Cry (heavy gaming). I also occasionnally do some photo / video editing - encoding. But my main aim is gaming.

Location : I am French and Lebanese, born and raised in France, and actually studying and living in Beirut - Lebanon. So the build will be made and used in Lebanon, and I'll buy parts both from Lebanon and France depending on the prices (I also mention that I am an expatriate, so I get VAT off in France for every purchase above 175€.)

Monitors : Only 1. College dorms :S

Peripherals : already have a SteelSeries Sensei + QcK Mouse Pad Tyloo Edition along with a SteelSeries Siberia V2 headset. Planning to get a keyboard, maybe the SteelSeries APEX.

Why am I building a new rig : I'm actually using a laptop and it's getting old for gaming (NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M) and I always wanted to build a rig with parts of my choice and be able to change them as time goes by.

THE BUILD

So, as for the build itself. Being located in Lebanon doesn't make things easy, 'cause gaming rigs and all the DIY-computer thing is really not hot here. It's very hard to find spare parts at a reasonable price.

Eventually, I found a company that provides this kind of services : http://www.pcandparts.com

They have quite a large range of parts. I'm not very delighted by the prices though.

Anyway, they have suggested gaming rigs, see in the picture below :

928056PCPartsRigs.jpg

I wasn't amazed and thought I would take one of their rig as a basis and change some parts. But then I realised I almost changed all the parts.

So here is what I came up with :

CPU: Intel Core i7-4770k Haswell 3.5GHz 8MB Quad Core LGA-1150 Original (239€ France = 328$)

Motherboard:  Asus MAXIMUS VI FORMULA - Z87 (DDR3) (LGA1150) (265€ France / 233,2€ Off VAT = 320$)

Memory: Kingston HyperX Beast 16 GB Kit (2x8 GB) 1600MHz DDR3 PC3-12800 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM XMP Desktop Memory KHX16C9T3K2/16X (173$ Pc&Parts - Lebanon)

Storage: Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB (already in possession)

Storage: Western Digital Scorpio Black 750 GB @7200RPM 16Mo Cache SATA II (already in possession)

Graphic Card:  Asus GeForce GTX 770 DirectCU II OC 4GD5 (365€ France / 500$)

Case:  ThermalTake VO30001W2N Level 10GTS /win (95$ PC&Parts - Lebanon)

Power Supply:  Thermaltake Smart SE SPS-730M 730W PSU (Included)

So all in all, as for now, my build will cost me 1400$. PC & Parts throws in a screen :  LG 23EA53V-P Wide 23" LED IPS Full HD / Wide Viewing Angle (priced at $169). I'm not concerned about the screen at all, I can easily change it later.

Which makes a final price around 1600$ (with a DVD player and a Lenovo keyboard/mouse).

MY THOUGHTS AND QUESTIONS

So I came up with a 1600$ build. With a 1800$ budget, I still have 200$ spare (and can add another 200$ later).

I absolutely love ASUS products, that's why a chose an ASUS mobo and graphic card. I'd like to keep it that way.

I'm not very confident about the RAMs they suggest. Are 16GB really necessary ? And Kingston ? Would it be smart to lower the RAMs and get Corsair or G.Skill ?

And my biggest concern is about the Case and Power Supply. Those are big and heavy parts, so I'm stuck to buy them in Lebanon.

So I'm taking ANY advice about the case, because I have no experience what so ever in this field.

Now for the PSU. They throw in a 730W PSU in the build. I think it's waaaay too much. I tried the calculator on Cooler Master's website and I came up with a total of 430W. Maybe I did a mistake.... Anyway. What do you think ?

CONCLUSION

I came up with a 1600$ build, with a budget of 1800-2000$. I think it's pretty decent, but I look forward to get your advices, thoughts and tips, especially on the case/PSU and RAM.

Let's keep in mind that this build is planned for this summer, so prices will certainly fluctuate by the time.

Sorry for the long post !

Thank you for your attention and for your future insights !  :)

Its around Israel and Turkey I believe. I don't think the countries on pcpartpicker will necessarily be close to him >.< Though Italy will be the closest, so you got it right as to what is closest.

That is long... Why a high end z87 board and not a unlocked processor?

Oh ok you're both right, my mistake, I wanted to switch the 4770 to a 4770k and forgot to mention it. So 4770k it is !  :)

One more till 1000

I'll see amazon.fr, it might be interesting. But I'd rather buy from my usual stores, as they can give me a detax invoice, as an expatriate I get VAT off.

For the moment it's 1800$ with the monitor and OS (I already have the OS). The keyboard will come a little bit later.

@Troubadour, I think you just broke the Linus Tech Tips forums record for the longest post ever. An award is needed for such an achievement. :P

Hahaha, well, I tried to make it as complete as possible

VAT stands for Value Added Tax. To be very fast (and very inaccurate), every product you buy has VAT included in the price that goes to the government. For example, in France VAT is rated at 19,6% for most goods. So if I buy a mobo priced at 100€, there is 19,6€ that goes to the government as VAT. But as I am an expatriate, I get VAT off for every purchase I make in France (as long as the seller can provide me a specific invoice notifying that). I don't actually get 19,6% off, it's more like 12%, but still valuable :)

Thanks for that lengthy explanation. I just wasn't sure what it was, but as soon as you said "Value Added Tax" I then realised "Ahh, yes. I've heard that before". I shall from now on understand what V...A...T stands for. Thanks once again. :D

I will consider the i5 4760K, as the hyperthreading of the i7 won't really help for gaming.

Now I really need advices on the case and PSU, because I have really no idea how to choose other than the design... If you have one to recommend concerning air flow, room or whatever important criteria that I don't know about...

Thank you guys !

550w is fine for you . seasonic - rosewill - xfx r fine i think seasonic gives a 5 years warranty . you should go for full or semi modular psu for some cable management and also good for airflow inside the case . why did u chose a single 8gb ? u can benefit from the Dual-Channel if u go with 2x4 and its cheaper than a single8gb unless you wanna upgrade to 16gb or 32gb later. if you have intention of doing 2-way sli or crossfire go with ud3h or g45. cuz the one you chose support 1 gpu .

Thanks for your help concerning the PSU.

I did not choose a single 8GB of RAM, you're looking at juretrn config suggestion.

Here is my desired config (see in the very first post):

CPUIntel Core i7-4770k Haswell 3.5GHz 8MB Quad Core LGA-1150 Original

Motherboard:  Asus MAXIMUS VI FORMULA - Z87 (DDR3) (LGA1150) (265€ France / 233,2€ Off VAT = 320$)

MemoryKingston HyperX Beast 16 GB Kit (2x8 GB) 1600MHz DDR3 PC3-12800 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM XMP Desktop Memory KHX16C9T3K2/16X (173$ Pc&Parts - Lebanon)

Storage: Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB (already in possession)

Storage: Western Digital Scorpio Black 750 GB @7200RPM 16Mo Cache SATA II (already in possession)

Graphic Card:  Asus GeForce GTX 770 DirectCU II OC 4GD5 (365€ France / 500$)

Case:  ThermalTake VO30001W2N Level 10GTS /win (95$ PC&Parts - Lebanon)

Power Supply:  Thermaltake Smart SE SPS-730M 730W PSU (Included)

The ASUS Maximus VI Formula supports Multi-GPU :)

lol sorry . if you r going for only gaming build you dont need 16gb .the vi formula you pay 100$ more than hero and ud4h for just some cool armor, water cooling or even a fan connector u could save that 100$ and go with gtx 780 or r9 290

Well, I will be doing some video recording/encoding, photoshop and browsing, so after second thoughts 16GB may not be too much, if I think on long term. I mean instead of adding some RAM later, if my budget is enough to get them now, why not ? :) but i'm still hesitant

I totally understand and agree with your point on the Formula... but it's more like the 'ASUS fan boy' in me that chose it haha I really like the design and the specs of it... plus i'm thinking about installing a water cooling system later, so the pre-built blocks might come in handy :)

the 770GTX 4GD5 is plenty enough no ? I mean, I already feel bad to put so much money for this graphic card hahaha

Now I just need a nice case to hold this baby ! :)

then its ok for 16gb. if your budget can handle everything with the formula then its your decision i just paying 100$ more for 10 sata connectors or 8 fan connectors or any extra thing is worth it ,but as i said its your decision. i dont konw a lot about GPUs so i looked up some bench for that 770 4gb nd found nothing so i dunno about that . but in gaming i think you should focus in gpu . if you r going for water cooling full tower is your choice 750d , nzxt 630 or any full tower cases just get good brand that has a good cable management , support water cooling and good looking of course

Thanks for your advice !

As the 750D and NZXT 360 aren't available at the store I will buy the case from, here are the choices I selected from the available products (you can see all the choices I have in my first post, that's what made it so long haha) :

Cooler Master HAF 932 RC-932-KKN1-GP

ThermalTake VL10001W2Z Element G Gaming case w/Adjustable fans

ThermalTake VH9000BNS Xaser VI Mx Black

ThermalTake VN700M1W2N Overseer RX-I

I know the Cooler Master HAF 932 is a very good reference. I like the design of the Thermaltake ones though.

What do you guys think ?
