New motherboard

Go to solution Solved by Haraikomono,

Microsoft of course had thought of the idea that customers will inevitably change their hardware to current gen, when the time comes.

Therefore only when there is excessive hardware changes over a shorter time period, lets say you change your motherboard every week, then the protection will actually kick in.

Hello, I recently just got a new ROG B-550 board and I plan to replace my old ROG B-450 one (Due to shipping damage), now I’ve heard in some cases this can mess up windows and make me need to buy a new license key which I don’t mind doing if need, but I’ve heard that if the board swap is super advanced like going from an MSI one to Gigabyte, you might have this problem. However I’ve also heard using similar boards or ones from the same manufacturer can not show these problems, since I’m still going to be using a very similar ROG board, should I expect this problem? Also is there any other problems that could occur?

🤔

Assuming that the Windows 10 key is linked to your Microsoft account (you can check in Settings > Update & Security > Activation), I doubt you'll need to purchase a new Windows 10 key.

Recently swapped out a GIGABYTE B450 to an ASUS X570, booted up to the OS, Windows was still activated and everything checked out. No Windows reinstallation required.

In the event that you do find yourself doing a clean reinstall, I'd suggest retaining a copy of your product key, just in case? Windows 10 should automatically activate if you have your Windows 10 key linked to your MS account and if you sign in with your MS account after a hardware swap and reinstall. If it doesn't reactivate automatically, that's when the retained product key comes in handy.
