Small NAS Build - Silent - SSD

HI

im not sure with LTT already did a nice video covering that topic if not I would love to see a a buid.

I was thinking about replacing my current QNAP with a more silent one which only uses SDD. And I actually found one from QNAP but not sure it is a current setting or already eol (tbs-453dx)

Which made me think if I could build it myself, because that way i might be able to get a bit better CPU than the once in the QNAP, a very silent CPU cooler should still be an option.

My requirement would be:

* Small Factor Motherboard with good CPU support with at least 4 NVMe M.2 slots supported.

* support by Open Scource NAS Projects ( e.g. FreeNas/TrueNas or similar)

* Support for the big NVMe Drives 2/4GB, like the one Linus got from Sabrent for the Whonnock 3

* at least 2.5 GBit support

* USB-3 / USB-C Support

* 16 better 32 GB RAM Support

* all fitted into a cool but small Case the size of a DVD-Player, Nuc or similar to like QNAP-453 case sizes

* HDMI 4k Support

* no gaming suport ( e.g. expensive GFX) required.

= Budget 2k-ish ( i know 4GB ssd are quite expensive atm)

any thought?

Does that budget include drives?

How amhy TB usable do you need?

Why do you need hdmi 4k support? Id make a differnt box for media plaback

Id probably still run hdds here, and just put in a in a closed where you can't hear it. SInce its on the network you can put it anywhere.

Id go sata ssds here, much easier to have lots of them and performance won't matter.

What do you mean by Small Factor Motherboard ? I highly doubt theres a ITX board with 4 nvme slots

pretty much any custom built will support those, although some functions might not be functional

really making this build unneccesarly difficult.

how about something like this:

https://mitxpc.com/products/z490m-itx-ac

Intel 10th Gen Core i9 10900K

and as a case maybe:

Jonsbo V8 Cuboidal Mini-ITX

or as a bonus you get something like this 😄

FANTEC mobiRAID X2 Externes Festplattengehäuse 2,5 Zoll: Amazon.de: Computer & Zubehör

I use one, and have 2x 1TB SSD as Raid 1 inside that little box.

Perfect for time machine backups

=> QNAP TBS-453DX-8G NAS System 4-Bay

they do have a Board with 4 slots - not sure how custom it is and if there are more available - that the reason to ask

but as we dont need a fancy GFX we could also use a PCIe adapter to get more drives in

the 4k Support was really optional bonus feature - guess generally you would most likely use SMB/DLNA to play on your TV anyway

But I would love to run some container on it so RAM and better CPU is a nice to have feature here compared to the QNAP onces ...

Wow, now that looks really nice.

10gbe, 4 slots m.2. never heard of that lineup before. looks really good.

though the capacity will be limited depending ont he cost for the ssds.

Yeah, and Im not sure if

* It supports bigger SDD 2GB++

* It will be compatible with TrueNas

* CPU is still on the "down low"

* Ram can be maxed to 16gb only

* not really sure how old that it and if there is a new version in the making coz its not so available

* also kinda expensive for the rig itself without SDD

that the reason I though I might be able to build something similar myself
