This is a real first world problem.. Well my 5900x arrived yesterday. It is sitting unopened on my desk. 3 months ago I got a 5800x and it has been kicking right along. Pretty much the only thing I do that can't be done on a cheap chromebook is game. I game on a CRG9 (5120x1440 @120hz) right now but intend to upgrade to a 144hz 32 inch 4k monitor when they become available. I use a 3090 FE right now. But don't think I'm just blowing money willy-nilly. This system replaced a 4790k and a 1080ti. The 4790k build was from late 2014 and the 3090 FE I only got because I can mine with it when I'm not gaming (in 1.5 months it has rolled just about 1/3rd of what I paid).

So my big debate here is do I sell the 5800x at a loss and use the 5900x or do I just keep rolling with the 5800x and sell the 5900x for what I paid to a buddy making a build? I figure I'll be taking a $125 loss on the 5800x + the extra money the 5900x cost.

My primary points for putting in the 5900x

1. potentially longer lifespan, hopefully push me one extra gen in the future before wanting to upgrade.

2. cooler temps since the heat is spread out better leading to less AIO ramping (Artic Liquid Cooler II)

Any thoughts appreciated!

This PC is for gaming? Just keep the 5800x, you'll never notice a difference by swapping it out.

Now, if you were leveraging high threaded workloads in professional software, the story might be different.

Ryzen 7 7800x3D -  Asus RTX4090 TUF OC- Asrock X670E Taichi - 32GB DDR5-6000CL30 - SuperFlower 1000W - Fractal Torrent - Assassin IV - 42" LG C2 - Windows 11 Pro

The 5800X is super fast and unless you need that many cores for some sort of professional work then you technically don't need to get a 5900X. The only thing to note is that the 5900X IS faster (But that's obvious because higher#=better product lul). Naming schemes suck on these things haha.

Remember that you and I are human and we both make mistakes. If I say something you disagree with, you don't have to fight about it.

The difference between the two in games is the 5900X usually can holder higher boost clocks for longer, so you will get better performance with it in games. If it were me personally I'd run the 5900X for that 3-5 FPS difference and (let's be honest, this is the primary reason) the bragging rights, and sell off the 5800X since you'll make up the difference mining with the 3090 in about a month. However, if you're friend actually has a use for the 12 cores (lot of virtualization, rendering, etc.) I'd just sell it to him for cost since it would take him probably about a month of effort to try and score another one, and you would both be doing pretty well for your systems.
